Hello again! I looked through the polls from past years to see which classics have missed the top position and I came up with these four. I hope they will rekindle your interest in oldies.

My review of the masterpiece, Black Wings Has My Angel

Awesome selection. Three out of the four are definitely on my TBR list.

I was tearing up for the Sterling Hayden character at the end of the Asphalt Jungle movie.

I saw the movie version of "Odds Against Tomorrow" and thought it was one of the best heist movies in my collection, so I'm curious about the book, but I am also very interested in Asphalt Jungle and the other two. I have all four on my TBR

The Asphalt Jungle is kind of out of my price range, but I'll keep my eyes open for a used copy locally. I'm voting for Thieves Like Us since I already own a copy.

Black Wings Has My Angel is an excellent book but I read that for another group. I'm Scottish so my thought processes meshed very closely with Melki's.

I voted for "The Asphalt Jungle". My library has a copy. It has a electronic copy of "Black Wings" but I dont like ebooks. The other two it does not have.

Yeah, but I think $8.99 for an ebook is too high. For that price, I expect something I can put on my shelf to impress my friends . . . or the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Amazon has Black Wings Has My Angel for the low, low price of under a buck right now. That's a reasonable price for an ebook.

I voted for Black Wings Has My Angel. I bought it last year on Kindle and haven't had the time to read it, though I'm quite interested in reading it.

I might change my vote to "Black Wings" if there's a tie for the top spot. Those reviews are really gushing.

After rereading my review, I might just join you. It is an outstanding book that I would enjoy rereading.

All good choices, but I've had my eye on "Black Wings Has My Angel" for some time. For now, that's my choice.

FYI- for anyone checking libraries, Thieves Like Us is also one of the novels in Crime Novels: American Noir of the 1930s & 40s

To be honest, I only voted for Thieves because I thought it had no chance.

In other words, I am open to lobbying or bribery to change my vote.

Chris, if you read ASPHALT JUNGLE, you can then see the movie, which is better than the much later Altman version of THIEVES LIKE US.

I know February is a short month and that I left the poll open until later, but even if it remains tied at the top I am interested in getting to read both Asphalt Jungle and Thieves Like Us. Then eventually re-watch the movies.

By golly, you're right! ASPHALT JUNGLE is not in print, and costs $25.00 and up. May I change my vote, too?

I didn't realize Marilyn Monroe was in the movie!



I did see it, but my impression must be a vague one.

The other player was Louis Calhern, who was in a jillion movies in that period, especially MGM ones.

I had no idea Asphalt Jungle was so expensive. And of course no local library has a copy.

Now if I change my vote to Dark Wings, it'll be a three-way tie.

This also gives the one person who voted for ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW enormous leverage, if s/he chooses to exert it.

And for what it’s worth, The Asphalt Jungle is on TCM this morning.

I thought it was a good part, and very memorable. It was one of the first that showed she could really act and one of the first to get her recognized for more than just her looks.

I voted Thieves Like Us because I had already marked it to-read and because my library owns a copy.

It appears that Asphalt Jungle is available at my library from Overdrive.
