Hunkpapa warrior Gall had lost his two wives and three children in the early fighting, and he fought to avenge their deaths. He led hundreds of warriors from all the different bands at the camp in a counterattack on Custer’s two hundred soldiers. The ensuing battle lasted only about thirty minutes.
