“Trying to get yourself killed?”
“Trying to find a way to live with myself.”
“Just do it.”
“I hate stitches. I’d rather be stabbed than stitched up.”
“Asshole.”
One victory in a sea of loss, but the tension in Lara’s chest still eased.
“Please don’t leave me behind. Please let me fight.”
“Awake or asleep, all I see is your face. All I hear is your voice. All I feel is you in my arms. All I want is you.”
“There is no one in the world like you.”
“You are my goddamned damnation, but there will never be anyone but you.”
“This was a mistake.” “It wasn’t. Don’t say that.” “It was.
“I can’t be around you, Lara. I can’t risk this happening again.” She knew he was right, but still she said, “I love you.”
“You have to choose, you know.”
“Between her and Ithicana. You can’t have both.”
Aren had left her.
Ithicana was free.
He felt nothing. For anything. Not even this place.
Picking it up, he held the flame to a splatter of oil, watching as it ignited.
“To protect Zarrah. No battle. No losses. No treason.
“Eranahl.” The word came out strangled. “They’re calling for aid.”
because Aren refused to let Eranahl fall without a fight.
She had to. Because she refused to let Eranahl fall without a fight.
“We won’t be able to get you back.”
“It’s time for me to leave anyway.”
“I’d like a word with my father.”
“I challenge you. Here and now. You choose the weapon.”
But she had to keep going. For the sake of everyone in Eranahl, she had to keep fighting.
And the shock that blossomed on his face as she sank her knife into his chest.
“You are a traitor,” he hissed. “To your family. And to your people.”
“No, Father,” she whispered. “That’s what they’ll say about you.”
They lifted their weapons. Lara leaned backward.
Because the battle was over.
“Swim, Lara! Swim!”
Dozens of them. Hundreds of them. And Ahnna and Taryn were shouting at her, gesturing to the cavern below. “Swim!”
Keep fighting, she ordered herself. You will not give up. You are too close to give up.
“I’ll negotiate their return to Maridrina.”
“You need to open the portcullis!”
“Lara,” he screamed, right before her body slammed against the steel of the portcullis.
“I’ve got you.”
“I won’t let you go.”
“You need to let me go.”
“You need to get somewhere safe.”
“No! I’m not leav...

“Look at me. Listen to me.”
“I’m so sorry for all the hurt that I caused you. All the hurt I caused Ithicana. And I need you to know that I’d die a thousand times over if there were a way to undo it.”
“But I need you.” He pulled her tight against the metal, his forehead pressing against hers through the bars. “I love you, and I’ve never stopped. Not once, not even when I should have.”
“Since the day we met, there has never been anyone but you. And there never will be anyone but you. You are my queen, and I need you.”
