“It won’t,” Aren agreed. “But Silas won’t rule forever.” He cast a backward glance at Zarrah, who was staring at the floor. “And neither will you.”
“Let them kill me.” Aren lowered his head. “No.”
“Time,” he said, “for General Anaphora and I to negotiate an alliance between Ithicana and Valcotta.”
“I’ve been stationed in Nerastis since I was seventeen. Which means for nearly five years I’ve been on the front lines of the war with Maridrina, watching as we fought and killed over the same pile of rubble, the same ten miles of coastline. Back and forth with no end in sight. And why should there be an end, when we’ve been fighting this same war for hundreds of years? No one even knows what it’s like not to be at war.”
“Keris Veliant is my enemy.” Zarrah’s gaze met his, unblinking.
You’ll be charged with treason and executed.”
“Some things are worth dying for.”
“Good luck, Your Grace. I look forward to fighting alongside Ithicana.”
“I wouldn’t use you as an assassin before, Lara. And I refuse to do it now. Promise me you’ll let this go.”
It was what he loved about her. And what he hated.
“You go, I’ll cover you!”
“Not a chance.”
But there were a dozen of them and only one of her.
“Go!” she shouted. “Don’t stop!”
he and Lara were fighting together, holding them off.
This was where it was going to end. And it was not, Aren thought, the worst way to go: with his queen fighting at his back.
“Goodbye, Aren,”
“It’s time we went home.”
There hadn’t been a chance of him leaving her behind.
“You want to kill her, you’ll have to kill me first.”
“She freed me from captivity. I owe her my life.”
“You all have cause to hate me,” she said. “I came to you as a spy for Maridrina. I deceived you. Manipulated you. Conspired to betray you.”
“I’m not here for forgiveness. I’m here to ask you to allow me to fight because I assure you, I hate my father more than any of you ever could.”
“I know. But allow me to avenge the harm done to Ithicana instead.”
Not his wife. Not his queen. Not his.
“I’ll do it,” she repeated. “I’m fast, and I’m a good climber.”
“Run, Lara!”
Jor and Aster had him by the arms, hauling him back,
But he’d seen the snake hit her. Even a shallow bite was enough to be deadly. He had to get to her.
“Are you hurt?” “I’m fine.”
“Aren, I’m fine.”
making her seem wilder. Fiercer.
But Lara had never doubted him.
But there wasn’t a chance that Lara was going to let Taryn die without a fight.
She was outnumbered ten to one, but Lara had never let bad odds stop her before.
“She ruined my life!” she screamed. “It would’ve been better if she’d stabbed me in the heart!”
“When the war is won, she’ll leave. She’s only here to fight.”
Unease bit in his stomach, and he turned toward Jor. “Where is Lara?”
A clean slice just below her hip, but nearly down to the bone.
“You can do this.”
“Just get it done.”
“It doesn’t change how everyone thinks of you.”
