Why are you bound?”
“I’m going to be looking after you.” Athlen huffed. “As a prisoner?” “As a guest.”
“Oh no,” he said. “You aren’t running away this time. I made that mistake before.”
“Thank you, my prince, for everything. I will repay you.”
His shocked expression morphed into a flirty grin. “You really are a prince.”
A shiver of promise in the timbre of Athlen’s voice gripped Tal.
Athlen with his arms crossed on the low shelf, his long red-and-gold tail arched behind him.
“You… you tricked me.” “A little,” Athlen admitted. “I couldn’t transform fully with that fetter on my ankle. I needed it off.”
“You told me you weren’t afraid of me.”
“Did my men hurt you?” “I gave as good as I received,”
“I make exceptions for myths from the sea,”
Tal felt his eyelids droop, and Athlen laughed into his mouth. “You are tired, my prince,”
“I think we established what happens when you try to order me around, my prince.”
“Some things you shouldn’t worry yourself with, my prince. Especially with all the other burdens you carry.”
“I will shield you. Do you trust me?” “Yes.”
Athlen’s smile trembled, and his eyes filled. “I want to be alone together with you.”
“Do I need to ask again?”
“Good-bye, little fire. You are a better human than most.”
