The detective was handsome, but he was also a bit of an arse I was starting to see.
Sophie Gove.” The other woman held out her hand, and I shook it gently. “Amy Jenkins, or Audrey Jupiter,” I introduced myself, unable to help smiling slightly. I had never actually formally introduced myself as both myself and my alter ego before. felt very odd. “I know, I’m a huge fan!” A big smile broke out on Sophie’s face, and Hayden shifted uncomfortably between us.
It was one thing for me to write the fantasy down, a whole different thing to explain them to a handsome detective that would probably be starring in the next one.
Hurt and surprise spread quickly across Hayden’s face and I instantly felt guilty. “Sorry, I was a bitch. You are entitled to your opinion.” I couldn’t put my finger on why I was so uncomfortable with the feeling that I had upset Hayden.
“You’ve really never read my books, have you?” I asked, unable to hide my smirk at his innocence. “Erm…no,” Hayden answered uncertainly.
and don’t dress like a cop, or no one is going to talk to either of us. These people really protect their privacy,”
Yes, I was attracted to Hayden, but he was also a judgemental arsehole, whom I could never see myself being friends with outside of this.
Give Detective Whittaker a chance tonight, okay?” She pleaded with me. “Huh?” I spluttered out, utterly confused. “He can be a little judge-y at first, but he’s actually a good guy, and his heart’s in the right place,” she explained. I narrowed my eyes at her suspiciously. “What aren’t you telling me?” I questioned Sophie, and she gave a bashful shrug. “He’s judgemental with everyone, but I’ve never known him to apologise and try to make amends before.” “You guys seem really close,” I observed. “I’m not interested in him if that’s what you’re asking. We are just friends, and he is also single,

know I shouldn’t drink on the job, but I think I need one to take the edge off.
Your boyfriend?” Hayden asked with a grimace. “Ex-boyfriend, it was kind of hard to keep our relationship going after he told me he was gay,” I told him, wondering why he was even asking that question in the first place.
“I haven’t actually done any of the stuff in my books, like at all. I’ve only had sex a couple of times,” I mumbled, feeling vulnerable but unable to resist the urge to be honest with Hayden. “Very funny.” He shot me an eye roll. “I’m not joking,”
I felt my heart squeeze at the protective gesture. I had never met a man who treated me like this before, like I was special.
unsure what to make of me. Well that definitely made two of us.
I was focusing on not crying until I reached the safety of my front door, and the grumpy detective seemed unsure how to proceed now he had rejected me again. The brakes squeaked slightly as we pulled to a stop outside my house, my seatbelt was already off, and I was halfway out of the door before he had the handbrake on.
Turning around allowed me to see the hungry look in his eyes as they roved my body. I nodded dumbly and closed the car door, walking to my front door in a confused daze. Did he want me or not? Either way he didn’t drive off until I was safely inside my house, which was a touching and gentlemanly thing to do, but also more confusing.
was torn between feeling silly that I had called Hayden over nothing and being kind of turned on by his dominant voice.
Chapter Seven
I looked like I had been well and truly fucked, and God, yes, I had been.
like he wondered if this was a stupid idea. I felt special and it was so sweet he wanted to make sure he treated me that way.
Nice policemen don’t talk like that,” I scolded, my voice a little breathless. Haydens hand reached up and stoked the back of my neck, sliding around to grip my hair and my nape, tugging me towards him until our lips were millimetres apart. “Well, I fucking do,”
kind of scares me how much I like him already, it feels way too fast, but I don’t want it to stop.” “Don’t worry, you two love birds have me to keep you in check,”
Detective Whittaker,” came a sultry female voice, followed by the entrance of a gorgeous brunette in a skirt that was a little too short and tight for a police station. “Hi Melanie,” I was secretly pleased at the cold and formal tone in Haydens voice towards the attractive woman, “what do you need?”
“I promise I will never lie to you again,” he says sincerely, and I believe him.
You’re staying with me tonight.” His tone was the authoritative one he used that gave no wiggle room, and I didn’t want to argue, either. I wouldn’t feel safe here for a long time and the idea of sleeping next to the amazing man holding me was incredibly soothing, so I nodded my head in agreement.
Hi,” I called, edging into the room, feeling nervous but wasn’t sure why. Hayden’s face broke into a huge smile when he saw me, and it made my heart rate pick up speed and my lower body throb. “Did you sleep okay?” he asked, still smiling gently at me while I tried to play down the wave of contentment that came over me when I saw him barely dressed in the kitchen, me wearing his t-shirt, my hair probably mussed and a huge smile on my face that seemed to be there more and more since he came into my life. “Yes, sorry about falling asleep.” I couldn’t help but blush as he walked towards me.

I didn’t want to risk scaring him off with all my feelings and ruining what we have right now.
don’t want our relationship to be based on lies. You can ask me anything whenever you like,” he told me honestly, smiling softly. “Relationship?” I asked, a tinge of hope in my voice that made me wince. “Are we not? Sorry, I’m not good at this,” Hayden frowned. “Are you trying to say you want to be the only man in my life and want me to call you my boyfriend?” I couldn’t help but tease him to hide my own nerves. “I’m trying not to sound like I’m twelve, but yes,” he looked down at his wine glass again, anticipating rejection. I stood and moved so I was straddling his lap, forcing him to look

Now I get to tell my book club that I caught my son sleeping with a famous author,” she grinned at
Take care, dear,” she tells me as she untangles us, “and take care of my boy, too, please.”
That poor receptionist has too many other things to deal with than worrying about who one employee is having sex with,” he laughed it off. A flicker of hurt went through me. Is that still all we are to him? After everything we said and did in the last twenty-four hours, I thought things had changed, but maybe I had misunderstood what was happening between us? My pensive mood stays with us as we weave through the corridor and drop into the chairs in our project room. I let out a heavy sigh of contemplation which earns me a raised eyebrow from Hayden.
Oh, so you’re not staying with me tonight?” He sounds a little off, but I’m not sure if it’s hurt or relief, so I make a joke to hide my concern. “No, I was going to crash at Lily’s tonight, and give you a night of peace,” I grin at him. “But I thought you were staying with me until it was safe?” He looks genuinely hurt now, and that is the absolute last thing I wanted. “I just wanted to give you some space,” I tell him, taking his hand in mine and lacing our fingers together.
Chapter Nineteen
Angela had the right idea. It was a good way to deal with our grief as we were all busy and together, rather than home, alone with nothing to do but think of our memories of Lily.
closed my laptop with much more force than necessary, frustrated at my lack of concentration. Normally when I started writing a new book, I was so excited I couldn’t think of anything except that. Now I kept circling back to Hayden pushing me out of the case and Lily being horrifically ripped from my life, and I couldn’t even tell anyone about the full extent of it.

“I thought mirroring your books would finally get your attention, but the only thing that got your attention was that fucking policeman, and you couldn’t wait to drop your knickers for him.”
“Hi Chantelle, what’s up?” His voice had returned to normal, friendly Oliver, but now I had seen his other side I felt stupid for not seeing through his terrible acting before.
Say it Amy,” Johnny tried to sound authoritative but there were tears streaming down his cheeks too, which lessened the effect. “It’s not my fault,” I mumbled just to placate them. “Try again,” Chantelle nudged my shoulder with her hand. “It’s not my fault,” I repeated with slightly more conviction. “I don’t believe you,” Johnny said, shooting me a stern look, which this time, I believed. “It’s not my fault,” I said, my voice firm and clear this time.
“I just got you back, and I’m not ready to leave you again yet,”
“I was so worried! What took you so long?” She barked at Hayden, and I couldn’t help the smile that broke out across my face as she scolded her son. Hayden’s mum’s hug made me want to start bawling all over again.
