“We know that if you have an emotion, it shows on your face. Now we’ve seen it goes the other way too. You become what you put on your face. ... If you laugh at suffering, you don’t feel suffering inside. If your face shows sorrow, you do feel it inside.”

the oxygenation of the cells. It also controls the flow of lymph fluid, which contains white blood cells to protect the body.

What is the lymph system? Some people think of it as the body’s sewage system. Every cell in your body is surrounded by lymph. You have four times as much lymph fluid in your body as you do blood. Here’s how the lymph system works. Blood is pumped from your heart through your arteries to the thin, porous capillaries. The blood carries oxygen and nutrients to the capillaries, where they are then diffused into this fluid around the cells called lymph. The cells, having an intelligence or affinity for what they need, take oxygen and nutrients necessary for their health and then excrete toxins, ...more

bloodstream has a pump, your heart. But the lymph system doesn’t have one. The only way lymph moves is through deep breathing and muscular movement. So if you want to have a healthy bloodstream with effective lymph and immune systems, you need to breathe deeply and produce the movements that will stimulate them.

inhale one count, hold four counts, exhale two counts. If you inhaled for four seconds, you would hold for sixteen and exhale for eight. Why exhale for twice as long as you inhale? That’s when you eliminate toxins via your lymphatic system. Why hold four times as long? That’s how you can fully oxygenate the blood and activate your lymphatic system. When you breathe, you should start from deep in your abdomen, like a vacuum cleaner that’s getting rid of all toxins in the blood system.

If you look to nature and you see the biggest and most powerful animals, you’ll discover they’re herbivores. Gorillas, elephants, rhinoceroses, and so on all eat only water-rich foods. Herbivores live longer than carnivores. Think of a vulture. Why do you think it looks that way? It doesn’t eat water-rich foods. If you eat something that’s dried and dead, guess what you’re going to look like?

difference in people’s abilities to fully tap their personal resources is directly affected by their goals. A study of the 1953 graduates of Yale University clearly demonstrates this point. The graduates interviewed were asked if they had a clear, specific set of goals written down with a plan for achieving those goals. Only 3 percent had such written goals. Twenty years later, in 1973, the researchers went back and interviewed the surviving members of the 1953 graduating class. They discovered that the 3 percent with written specific goals were worth more in financial terms that the entire ...more

State your outcome in positive terms. Say what you want to happen. Too often, people state what they don’t want to happen as their goals. 2. Be as specific as possible. How does your outcome look, sound, feel, smell? Engage all of your senses in describing the results you want. The more sensory rich your description, the more you will empower your brain to create your desire. Also be certain to set a specific completion date and/or term. 3. Have an evidence procedure. Know how you will look, how you will feel, and what you will see and hear in your external world after you have achieved your ...more

Now I want you to try something else: Pick out the four most important goals for you for this year. Pick the things you’re most committed to, most excited about, things that would give you the most satisfaction. Write them down. Now I want you to write down why you absolutely will achieve them. Be clear and concise and positive. Tell yourself why you’re sure you can reach those outcomes, and why it’s important that you do.

Now that you have a list of your key goals, review them against the five rules for formulating outcomes. Are your goals stated in the positive? Are they sensory specific? Do they have an evidence procedure? Describe what you will experience when you achieve them. In even clearer sensory terms, what will you see, hear, feel, and smell? Also note if the goals are maintainable by you. Are they ecological and desirable for you and others? If they violate any of these conditions, change them to fit.

When you get him to be more specific, you often must move from one part of the precision model to another. So if you ask the person to be more specific, he may say, “I’m depressed because I always mess up on the job.” What’s the next question? Is the universal true? It’s not likely. So you would ask, “You always mess up on your job?” Most likely, the answer will be, “Well, no, not always, I guess.”

if we are just trying to create rapport merely by the content of our conversation, we’re missing out on the largest ways we could be communicating commonality to the brain of another person. One of the best ways to achieve rapport is through mirroring or creating a common physiology with that person. That’s what the great hypnotherapist Dr. Milton Erickson did. He learned to mirror the breathing patterns, posture, tonality, and gestures of other people. And by doing that, he achieved a totally binding

how do you mirror another person’s physiology? What kinds of physical traits can you mirror? Start with his voice. Mirror his tonality and phrasing, his pitch, how fast he talks, what sort of pauses he makes, his volume. Mirror favorite words or phrases. How about posture and breathing patterns, or eye contact, body language, facial expressions, hand gestures, or other distinctive movements? Any aspect of physiology, from the way a person plants his feet to the way he tilts his head, is something you can mirror. Now, this may sound absurd at first.
