His eyebrows go up. “You think there’s something wrong with having someone to talk to?” “I don’t need someone to talk to. I’m fine.” “Everyone needs someone to talk to, kid.” He hesitates. “Do you have anyone at all?” I trace another finger through the condensation on my glass, then lift my eyes to meet his. “Yeah. I do.”
You do know who I am. Find me. Grab me. Shake me. Please.
I want to be coy, but my voice comes out serious. “Am I stronger than you thought I was?” “You’re exactly as strong as I thought you were.”
“I don’t think you wanted to kill yourself.” I pull next to his car in the now-empty employee lot. “Didn’t you listen to everything I just told you?” “Yeah. I did. Maybe you wanted to try to kill yourself, but I don’t think you wanted to actually do it.” “What’s the difference?” He opens the door and gets out, standing there, looking down at me. “You wore your seat belt.”
