“Don’t you even think about getting near her you asshat! And how about you focus on Casper the friendly ghost over there?”

The confession that kept me up most of the night. Amelia Nuñez has a crush on me. Had. First crush means she was just a kid, but what about now? To think that the woman who I’ve had embedded in my heart for the better part of a decade, at one time had feelings for me.

Antonio is Amelia’s brother and my best friend. Plus, he owns a gun and knows how to use it.
Proclaimed that she would be the only gringa at our parties. “If we just start letting any ol’ white girl join the fun then I will lose my allure with this crowd!”
“Kicking people out of their own beds…not letting them into family gatherings? Tsk tsk.” He gently pushes past me and into the entryway, then leans down and whispers into my ear, “Remind me to teach you some manners later tonight.”
“Listen, you’re on vacation, so have at it. But I would personally prefer it if we didn’t have a repeat of vomitgate,”
So out of an abundance of caution, and for the safety of my penis, I have placed her in the room furthest from mine.
“So, here’s how this is going to go. You’re free to snoop, as long as you understand that there is no kicking me out of my bed this time. If you feel the urge to sleep in my bed, it is with the understanding that it is with me in it. Got it?”
There is also a reading nook by the bay windows that overlook what seems like endless miles of snow.

And just like I’ve done hundreds of times before, I fall asleep dreaming of Evan Cooper.
I decided to keep it simple with a chicken carbonara, her favorite, according to an old Instagram post. Don’t judge me.
Now that I see her in this light, I can’t help but marvel at her. She seems so peaceful and angelic.
Her question is immediately followed by a loud grumble from her stomach. “You didn’t hear that,” she declares.

“You’re a smart girl … I mean woman, Amelia. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know why I was really there at the club to pick you up. Or are we going to play the dumb, innocent, damsel in distress card again?”
“First of all, I’m the woman who managed to kick my cheating fiancé in the balls after I walked in on him cheating on me with one of my coworkers. Oh! And mind you Nikki and Antonio were both at the scene of the crime and I managed to wrangle them in so they wouldn’t end up with felonies on their record.”
“Let’s see what else Evan … oh yeah, I immediately had to move into an overpriced studio apartment, after spending a good chunk of my money on a wedding that didn’t happen, put in extra hours at work so I could potentially score a promotion that would get me the hell out of the city, and manage to be there for my dad and brother while we all grieved for my mom.”
“But please tell me Evan, how your reasoning for busting into a club and practically kidnapping me is something I should be well aware of?”
“No, no. Now’s as good a time as any. Please enlighten me, why were you at the club to see someone you barely give two shits about?”
“Wait, barely gives two shits about, are you serious right now Amelia? Look, I get it, I fucked up a bit there, but you can’t possibly think that I don’t care about you,”
“Oh come on Evan, no need to keep up the façade. Aside from this past weekend and my mother’s funeral, you have never given me the time of day. I wouldn’t say you hate me, because hate would require some level of attention. No, you’re indifferent towards me, barely pay me any mind. For all I know you only see me as Antonio’s annoying little sister. I get it. It’s fine. But you don’t get to ignore me for most of my life, then come barreling in insisting on being the main attraction!”
“No! I’m done with this little game. You tell me. Right now. Why did you go to the club? Why do you keep showing up and taunting me? Why, after all these years of knowing each other, are we playing this little game now Evan?”
“Don’t bother Evan. If you haven’t noticed, I’ve met my quota of listening to men bullshit me this year. Maybe I’ll indulge this conversation in a year or two.”

“And would you look at that, they even have a Paw Patrol band aid in here for yo—” “I have feelings for you,” I blurt out.
don’t believe you, Evan.” She finally meets my eyes, her shoulders sagging before she continues. “Not in the sense that I’m calling you a liar, but rather I don’t think you truly mean it. You can’t.” She turns around to start walking out of the bathroom.
“Miami. When I came to visit you after you had broken up with your high school sweetheart. I wasn’t there because I was on a business trip. I flew down because I knew it was your birthday, and I wanted to celebrate with you. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was about to have the best night of my life with the girl who's always had my heart.”
“Once I got to Miami, I thought that I could play it cool and just go out for dinner or drinks with you and your friends, but once you spotted me in your dorm room, you lit up in a way I’ve never seen before. You jumped into my arms and introduced me to everyone, then insisted I join you on your quest to sneak into a party on Miami Beach. That whole night you shared stories of your adventures with your friends, and told everybody about our holiday celebrations in New York. You were in the spotlight and everyone, including myself, was completely enamored by you.”
“Once you successfully snuck us in, we danced the night away. The feeling of having you in my arms, smiling and laughing. Hell, it’s a feeling I’ve never been able to replicate, no matter how hard I’ve tried. After Miami, I heard from your brother that you’d gotten back together with your ex, and I was completely gutted. I decided the safest way to keep myself from being destroyed by you, while still being able to be in your company was to keep you at arm’s length. I was always too little or too late when it came to fighting for your heart. That’s why I’ve never been in a serious relationship

“When I saw you going out with Nikki, I wasn’t thinking. I just saw your face and bolted to wherever you were. I had assumed you were still engaged, but I didn’t care. I just needed to see you, make sure you were safe. At least that’s what I told myself. Once I saw your left hand bare of a ring, something clicked inside me. It was time to come out of the shadows and be front and center in your life, even if it meant I kinda had to kidnap you. Also, I’m pretty sure Nikki’s boyfriend’s brother didn’t get arrested that night, another reason I need to send her a gift.”
“All this time. You felt something for me,” she says as a statement more than a question. I close my eyes and lean my forehead against hers and sigh. “All this time, babe.”
“So. Does this mean that you’re going to kiss me now?” she asks with a touch of attitude. I open my eyes and straighten up, raising back to my full height as I grab her hands. “No.” “No? “A drunk little birdie recently told me that I was your first crush. And according to first crush rules, that means that there will always be a teeny tiny special place in your heart for me. So I fully intend on figuring out what it was about me that made you fall, for the very first time in your life may I add, and remind you of all the reasons why you should take a chance on me.”
“Uhhhh oh my God this is so good,” I moaned. “Amelia, please answer the question. And for the love of God never make that noise again unless trying to send me to an early grave,”
“Yeah, I know. Maybe that’s why I’m almost thirty and still single,” I say as a joke, one that clearly doesn’t land for Evan. “Or maybe you just weren’t with the right person,” he says seriously.
