“Although, is it really too much to ask that he cares enough to check in when I’m sick? Or get all protective when I walk around late at night? Maybe threaten to put me over his knee?” “I don’t think that’s too much to ask for at all.”
“My bad,” said a masculine voice. “I should have told you not to scream and let the bad guys know I’m here. But you were having such an interesting conversation with yourself. I really don’t think it’s too much to ask at all. I’d happily put you over my knee if you were naughty. Not right now, though. Even I’m not such a terrible person that I’d spank a girl who was tied up. Well, actually . . . that could be quite fun. Under different circumstances.” What . . . what was happening? Was he a guard or someone else? Wait, he said bad guys . . . was he here to rescue her?
“I’m Autumn.” “Autumn. My favorite season.”
“Who . . . who are you?” she asked in a husky voice. “I’m about to be your hero.” “My . . . my hero?” she whispered.
“Are you a dream?” she asked. “A dream? Do I seem like a dream? I’ve always been described as more of a nightmare.” She flinched at that. “I already have enough of those.”
“Yes. How can I be sure you won’t tell anyone about me?” he mused. “I could pinky swear.” “True, you could. Everyone knows you can’t break a pinky swear or terrible things happen.”
“You do remember I’m here to kill them?” “Yes . . . but, I’ll be honest here. You don’t seem very good at it.” “Not very good at it? How would you know? I haven’t done anything.” “That’s kind of my point.
“You don’t want the gift because it’s in a box?” “I don’t like boxes.” “You don’t like boxes. Of course. Why would you like boxes? Nobody likes boxes.”
She glanced down at the check, looking it over. There was an image of a fox in the corner with For Fox Sake written underneath.
She turned her attention to the toy fox, pulling him tight against her. There was a little card around his neck. Hug me when you need to feel safe.
he was the best assassin in the world. He really should get a plaque saying that.
Looking after others wasn’t something he was familiar with. So, he’d just stood there like a dummy. But eventually, it had become impossible to just watch her suffer. Crouching next to the bed, he lightly touched her arm. “Shh, baby girl. You’re safe. I’m here. I’m going to keep you safe.”
Helping her gave him a buzz of satisfaction. He was the only one who could soothe her when she had a nightmare. He was really quite remarkable, wasn’t he? Was there anything that he couldn’t do? Sometimes, he even amazed himself, and he was well aware of just how magnificent he was.
Boy Wonder!
And he was cute. In disheveled way. He wore a green T-shirt with an open flannel over the top. His hair was down past his ears, and parts of it were sticking up, as though he’d been running his fingers through it. He pushed his glasses back up his nose, looking around almost nervously.
“And he looks cute and sweet.”
“Nice photo,” she told him as she picked it up. It wasn’t. It was terrible. He looked like he’d just had a fright. “It’s an awful photo.” “It really is,” she agreed. “Were you given a fright or hit by lightning or something beforehand?” “No, I’m just really unphotogenic. Here, this is my work ID.”
“Because I panicked! I thought it was a quiz and I didn’t know the answer.” Okay, this guy was a bit crazy. But she liked that. “Um, Autumn?” “Why are you still here?” she asked. “It’s my allure, isn’t it?” “Your allure?” “Uh-huh. You can’t resist it. I’ll try to tone it down,” she promised. “I hadn’t noticed your allure. Does it come out of your nipples?” “What? Why would you say that?” “I don’t know,” he wailed.
Yeah, he was definitely cute. He had a sort of sexy geek thing going on, which would totally do something for her if she wasn’t dead down there, that is.
Being awkward is my superpower. “It’s my superpower, too,” she said.
Build-A-Bear gift card.”
I like their superhero costumes. I, uh, collect bears wearing them.
In those photos, she looked cute. But she was more than cute. With her wide, hazel-colored eyes and dark auburn hair that lay in wild curls around her face, she was gorgeous. And it was hard for him to look at her without blushing. He liked cute things.
He didn’t know why he felt so protective of her. It wasn’t like he could take care of her physically. He wasn’t like his colleague, Stone, who could knock someone out with one punch. However, he’d do whatever it took to take care of her.
I need to clean my toilet twice a day!
My gosh, I can’t believe I did that. I’m not usually that clumsy. I’m generally very graceful, like a ballerina.” As she spoke, she tripped over something and nearly landed on her knees. He tried to reach for her, but she waved a hand at him. “I’m good. Nothing to see here. Graceful like a ballerina. Graceful like a ballerina.” Did she think that if she said it enough it might come true?
“I’m so sorry. I can’t believe I did that. I’m never this klutzy.”
“Autumn. Sit.” He forced some firmness into his voice. He hoped he did it right. He wasn’t a dominant guy, but he spent a lot of time around them. Usually, he was happy in the background, letting someone else take charge and make the decisions.
To his shock, she immediately sat. Okay, he must have done that right. Either that or she was even less dominant than he was.
Shoot. How did he keep her in one place? She was like a toddler. Getting into trouble wherever they went, but so darn cute, all you wanted to do was cuddle them when you did catch them being naughty. “Autumn? Where are you?” he called out.
“You’re very strong.” Not really. She weighed next to nothing.
“Freddy, you were meant to stay in my boobs.” Lucky fox.
Bad Brody. You cannot touch her just because you feel the overwhelming need to. She’s not your support stuffy. She’d sure make a cute one, though.
Seemed like she might have a slight temper. That juice box had been seconds away from feeling her wrath.
“I tend to just blurt stuff out without thinking. Sorry. My sisters are always telling me I need to get a filter.” “No,” she said quietly. “I don’t think you do. I like you how you are.” Red filled her cheeks. “I didn’t mean—” “It’s okay, Autumn. I like you too.”
Is Freddy Fox a criminal fox?”
He wasn’t sure about his Bunny meeting Brody today. She was his. He should he put a stop to it. Get rid of the boy. Only that felt almost . . . wrong. That was a strange feeling. Why would it feel wrong? Things rarely felt right or wrong to him.
I am strong. I am mighty. I carry around a stuffy, but that’s okay.
a fairy god-daddy.
Glancing around, she caught sight of a man bending down to pick up something off the floor. Damn, now that was a tight ass.
“Eww, I’ve got banana guts on me.” Bananas were not her friends.
Suddenly, she realized that he still had his hand on the small of her back from where he’d caught her before. She attempted to move away, but he wrapped his hand around her side and squeezed.
Almost as if he was ordering her to stay put. Which was a bit arrogant. But also, she liked the feel of him touching her.
That was the most excitement I’ve had in the last hour.” “The last hour?” she asked with amusement. “Was the rest of your day pretty exciting?” “More than you’d think.”
But it felt like her body knew him.
You’d be better in something with a better safety rating. Like a Hummer.” “A Hummer? I can’t drive a Hummer!” “Why not? Far safer than this. Yes, you should get a Hummer.”
“I can’t? Why not?” “Because I’m asking you not to?” It was weak but it was all she had. He sighed. “Disappointing, but I’ll heed your wishes.”
I’ve been watching.”” “Like a stalker?” Shit. Why did she say that? “Like a protective fairy god-daddy.” “Right. Sorry. Didn’t mean to accuse you of being a stalker.” “I’ve been accused of being worse.”
