Sometimes Val forgets that adults are just children with both more and less autonomy.
She knows Isaac, but in the same way she knows how to breathe. She just does, until she thinks about it, and then she can’t remember how to do it normally anymore. If she accepts that Isaac simply is and always has been, it feels right. But trying to figure out how she knows him makes panic flare, like missing a stair in the dark.
