Though my magic never once tingled to reveal what I could see in everyone else, my skin still zinged in response to his nearness.

That’s when the devil took me. It happened from time to time. Vi said I had a demon inside me that liked to come out and play on occasion. I lifted a cupcake out of the box and took another step closer, holding it out to him. “It’s sweet and creamy, Henry. I promise. Don’t you want to lick my cupcake?”

“Everyone needs a devil on their shoulder now and then. It’s good to be bad sometimes.”

You walk into a room, and people instantly smile. You bring joy wherever you go.

But none of them have the innate gift of spreading love with nothing more than their presence, making others feel seen and important and loved, like they matter.” He cupped my face and brushed his thumb along my cheekbone. “You do this, Clara. Every day. And you are the only one I—” He licked his lips. “I could ever have fallen in love with.”

Clara. My beautiful Clara. The gold that was mending all of my imperfect, broken pieces.

But being able to be inside the woman I was profoundly, ardently, hopelessly in love with was like being handed the keys to heaven. Only, I felt like the devil in the playground of paradise.

I don’t know what life has in store for us. I’d like to say I don’t care, but I do. I want to be the one to bring only joy into your life. The way you have for me. I hope for this with all my heart. The one thing I do know is that I want to spend all of the rest of my moments—good or bad—with you. Love, H

“I’ve heard of this happening with some Auras. It’s a sort of side effect after consummation with your soulmate. A manifestation of their deep joy through an aura everyone can see. It’s called a soul-halo.” I beamed brighter. Literally.

“So…” I turned back to Jules on Evie’s screen. “This is my magic telling me I’ve found my person. My one person.”

Sean’s voice rose over the partition from the reception desk. “You can use the supply closet for privacy if you need.”
