Confession: There are some things even I can’t plan for.
Mom’s already trying to figure out how to get another credit card to have the carpet replaced. I could dip into my savings to replace it, but that would set me back months...”
“I can do that.”
“Tyler, that’s too much.”
“It’s the least I could do,” he said. “I can get supplies cheap, and I’ve installed hundreds of floors before. Done. What else do you need?”
“We need a rail installed in the bathroom and another rail and a seat in the shower.”
“Easy. What else?”
“I’m here,” he said. “Do you want me to come to the hospital?”
“My hero,”
“Thanks for letting me rescue you for once.”
can’t believe you’re interested in me.”
“Hen, there are billions of women on the planet, and none of them have ever amazed me the way you continue to do. Please, believe me.”
“I’ll be the one in the purple dress, walking down the aisle.”
“And I’ll be the guy sitting there, wondering how in the hell he got lucky enough to be your date.”
“Settling down is not the same as settling for less. It’s resting where you know you belong. Not needing to run and chase and search anymore. It’s the best feeling ever.”
Safe? With Tyler, I felt terrified. Terrified of not being enough. Of being disappointing. Exhilarated. Electrified by his touch and the words he spoke about me. and then there was the fear—that all of it was too good to be true. None of that felt safe.
“Although, I have a friend I could hook you up with.”
“You’re in trouble! Already thinking of her when you’re on a guys’ trip?”
Confession: I’m... beautiful.
She looked beautiful. But more than that, she looked happy.
The woman looking at me in the mirror wasn’t the funny fat friend. She was beautiful. She was happy. And she smiled. Because now I knew when Tyler looked at me and saw something beautiful, I wouldn’t disagree.
As if my body sensed her, I turned, looking to the aisle. Henrietta approached, moving purposefully in a floor-length dress. Soft fabric swished around her perfect hips with each step, and the bouquet she held at her chest only accentuated her cleavage. But her face stole the show. She had a soft peach blush on her cheeks and her full lips were glossy. And the light in her eyes, in her smile, made her shine.
Our eyes met, and her smile grew, deepened, and for a moment, all the air was gone from the room. All the people had vanished. It was her and me and the sound of the pounding in my chest.
Confession: I’m not jealous, but I don’t mind claiming my territory.
“You were great up there,” he said. “I couldn’t take my eyes off you.”
“Thank you.”
“But there was one issue,”
“And what was...

“I wanted everyone to know you were mine, and we haven’t had that talk yet.”
“May I have this dance?”
“I’m not sure what my ‘male friend’ will think.”
I laughed, remembering how heady and nervous I’d felt to be introduced to Hen’s entire family as her male friend. But now I wouldn’t want to be known as anything else. “I think your male friend will be mighty disappoi...

“Did you drive here?” I asked. She nodded. “I can follow you to your place?” I kissed her, hard. “I’ll see you soon.”
Confession: Cleaning supplies turn me on.
I got out of my car, acutely aware of his eyes sizzling over me like no man had ever looked at me before. His gaze wasn’t greedy or hungry... It was... appreciative. And oh so sexy.
“Then would you believe me when I told you that you’re worth it?”
“That feels so good.”
“I can give you a foot rub,”
“And make me fall in love...

“You know they have this fancy contraption called rubber gloves.”
“As long as you’re with me, I’ll do the dishes.”
“So. Freaking. Sexy.”

Henrietta’s eyes slid closed, and her breathing slowly evened out. I smiled, feeling her completely relax in my hands, her legs growing heavy in my lap. I’d wanted to please her tonight, but this, knowing she felt safe enough to let her guard down with me... it was just as good.
“You’re one hell of a woman, Henrietta Jones.”
I’d wanted to take things to the next step with Henrietta, make her scream my name until she clenched around me, but once I saw how tired she was, I couldn’t ask that of her.
