“I completely understand. Thank you for inviting me to the party. I’ll see you on Monday.”
Confession: I haven’t really been saving for a house...
“Henrietta, I’m no math genius, but your stories aren’t adding up. You pay us two hundred a month for utilities, ninety dollars for your car insurance, and your phone is free through our family plan. Your car is paid off, and you fix everything for free at home. You buy all your clothes from the thrift store. Accounting for taxes, gas, and going out with your friends once a week, you have to be putting away, what, two thousand dollars a month? At least fifteen hundred for the last six years since paying down your student loans... Either I’m very confused about the kind of house you’re saving

“I am waiting for a man,”
“You just let a good one walk right out that door,” he said.
“I know, but that was my decision to make, and I made it.”
“Hen brought treats again. I’m really coming to love that girl.”
“She’s one of a kind.”
I couldn’t say no to her, not when she was smiling at me like that. “I’d love some.”
I’d be a burning man with no way to save myself from the flames.
This couldn’t get any worse than rejection, right?
“About the question you asked me the other night.”
“I’m really sorry about that,” I began. “I shouldn’t have crossed a line, and I promise it won’t happen again.”
“What if I want it to hap...

“You want her falling for the real you and not some lame tip your brother gave you five minutes before the date. Just be yourself, okay? It’s enough. I promise it’s enough.”
Tonight was going to be big. I could feel it.
Confession: No one in my family has any chill when it comes to first dates... especially me.
“These are beautiful, Tyler. Are they for me?”
“It’s Tyler Griffen, formerly landlocked redneck who wants to impress the most beautiful girl in California.”
“You are no redneck, you southern charmer.”
“On that note, let me keep up my good streak and...

For a moment, I leaned my temple against his strong shoulder and pretended I was one of those girls who’d been doing this all the time. The kind of girl who had no lack of dates for Friday night and was always treated like a gem. That’s how Tyler made me feel, and I was high on the experience. High on him.
Her eyes were awestruck at the splendor of the boat. And me? Well, I was enamored with her. Seeing everything through her eyes made it feel like the first time.
“You don’t like compliments,”
“I’m not used to them.”
“If we make it to another date, I’ll give you plenty of practice.”
“If the food is this good, you know I’m there.”
“You know size isn’t the only thing a guy sees,”
“Maybe it’s not the only thing you specifically see, but that’s not my experience with most men.”
“Do you know what it feels like to have people make fun of you at the beach for simply existing at your size? Do you know how it feels to walk by magazines and have headlines shouting at you that you need to change? D...

Confession: For a woman named Hen, I have a hard time not counting my chickens before they hatch.
“I should get you inside.”
“What if I don’t want to go?”

“I can’t predict the future, Hen, but until we figure out what this is...”
“I’m in. All in.”
“Then I should get you to the door like a gentleman instead of doing everything else I’m imagining right now.”
A swoop of desire went through my stomach. This could be it, I realized. The guy I lost my virginity to. The guy I loved. But I couldn’t get ahead of myself right now.
Instead, I let him open the door for me. We walked together down the sidewalk, and he kissed me on the cheek at the house, an unspoken promis...
