A biographer’s responsibility is to acknowledge the complexity of human existence, its many contradictions, crosscurrents, and nuances.
Once, in testimony at a congressional hearing, the chief noted the irony that whites had forced his people to move to a godforsaken region of Oklahoma “thinking we will drive these Indians down to where there is a big pile of rocks and put them there in that corner.” But when that supposedly useless land turned out to be worth millions, Bacon Rind said, “everybody wants to get in here and get some of the money.”
It is human nature to try to repress some memories and revive and reshape others.
