The book fell open in my palms to a bookmarked page. There was also a highlighted passage. Funny, I thought as I started to read, I never thought Ruben would— My thoughts scattered suddenly. A startling and heartrending realization dawned at what I was reading. The highlighted quote described Gatsby standing on his lawn in the middle of the night, stretching out his trembling hand and reaching through the darkness toward the green light on the other side of the harbor. It was the green light at the end of the dock where Daisy lived, the woman he loved and longed for so desperately. “The Green Light,” I whispered to myself, voice shaking. I jerked my head up to find Ruben standing on the other side of the bed, shirtless but still in his pants. His arms were at his sides, his body taut, chest heaving in deep, slow breaths. “You,” I began, swallowing hard at the lump in my throat, “you renamed your club The Green Light...for me?” I could barely get the words out of my mouth. His expression—aching and adoring and severe—belied the calm tenor of his voice when he said, “I’ve been bleeding inwardly for over a decade.”

I renamed it The Green Light so that my longing had a tangible place in my life. So that it could be a constant reminder of what I lost and what I still wanted.
