That makes me smile. I touch the brim of my hat to her, then sprint into the darkness.
There are five men at this table, and most of them want to kill each other. It’s making negotiations difficult.
Lochlan’s chair scrapes back as he begins to rise. “Are you insulting me, you spoiled—” “You have to ask?” Consul Sallister strokes his goatee. “I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised.”
a bizarre silent communication that always seems to speak volumes in the space of time between heartbeats.
I remember the hope in her eyes, how it cost me something to dash it away.
“When I found the note in your chambers, yes, I was concerned. When the porters told me you’d left alone, yes, I was concerned.” He gives me a look. “One man glaring at me is a matter of course, Tessa.”
“Ah, Tessa.” There’s something simultaneously wicked and warm in his eyes. “No one dared, until you.”
“Well, I nearly witnessed an assassination this afternoon, so I’m not sure I’m doing much.”
“You’re not being forward. You’re being kind.” He studies me a little too intently, so I swallow and look back at the map.
“I won’t say it’s not a challenge.” He shrugs, but there’s no arrogance to it. “Calm seas don’t make sharp sailors, Miss Cade. I’ve done it before. I can manage it again.”
He blinks as if he’s appalled. “I never joke about coffee.”
“We’re flying,” Rian says. “No one can hear your words up here. Speak freely.”
“Easy,” he says. “You won’t fall.”
“I watched you stop a revolution.” His eyes hold mine. “I don’t find either option hard to believe.”
Choices never seem like choices when the world only offers us bad ones.
“In case there was any uncertainty, I don’t like you much either.” “Truly? You’ve been incredibly subtle.” “I’m going to knock you down the stairs.”
“So make no mistake. When I pick a fight, you’ll know it.”
“Don’t worry. Crane hasn’t been able to put a hand on Rian yet. Trust me, he’s tried. Cap’s pretty clever himself.”
“I know people expect the worst of me,” he says quietly. “I didn’t realize you were among them.”
“Go ahead, Your Majesty,” says Bella, choking on laughter again. “Why don’t you introduce yourself?”
