It had kept a distance, just on the horizon, but the gulf had always been a massive thoroughfare so it wasn’t too strange.
“My queen,” I murmured, letting the rest of the din fall away. If I had to choose only one color to see the rest of my life, the specific blue of those love-filled eyes which looked back at me would be it. “Unreal,” she whispered. “All of this. It’s unreal.” “It is. Unreal, but it’s ours.”
lips made to both tempt and soothe me.
so I came out and told her to choke on a tit,
“I just—I wanted to make sure she really forgives me,” I confessed. “Not just because I told her a sad story about a sad prince who lived a sad, lonely life.
“Oh, dear brother. She is going to ruin you.” She gave me a soft smile as she tilted her head. “She already has.”
“I wish you could be my queen, want it to be you. I could see you wearing a crown.”
“I’ve never felt as if I could spend every moment with someone, and it wouldn’t be enough. As if the sky could crash down around us, and I wouldn’t care.”
“Could die happy here. So soft,” he murmured, pressing kisses to my skin as he withdrew from me, sliding his hands down my sides, rough palms grazing my body.
“I’ll never waste another moment with you. I’ll never take any of it for granted,” he said, voice low. “Neither will I,” I promised.
I couldn’t tell which constellation I looked at, but that didn’t matter. I’d love him beneath it all the same.
It perturbed me.
as I approached, I realized it was because Rainier was asleep on the sofa curled up around her legs, arms wrapped around her thighs and using them as a pillow. He snored softly, and she tilted her head back on the sofa to look up at me. I’d never seen her so happy. She seemed tired, certainly, but content. Her fingertips drew light circles on his scalp, and when she glanced down at him, a soft smile formed on her lips. She had quite a pretty smile, I realized.
gently removed herself from Rainier’s embrace, settling a throw pillow under his body to ease the transition. He turned his head toward me as he adjusted, and I realized how much younger he looked in his sleep. I had grown quite fond of him, though I was still wary of the idea of him being my father.
“She’s here to see me.” His words curled around my spine and tugged it straight, the accent clear and crisp as the winter air around us.
“Min viltasma, please.”
“I respect your wishes, Elora. I will be sorry for the rest of my life, but I won’t give you any more trouble.”
if I was just one more person on a long list who had turned their back on him when he needed them most.
Everything about the woman irked me.
the only person I’d kissed since Lucia. Sure, I’d had lovers, but not once had I ever kissed them. Not even Ven. No, I’d saved that because I didn’t want to erase Lu’s memory from my lips.
“So, what were you researching, songbird? Would you like some help?”
She smelled as good as she had the last time, and that pissed me off all the more.
“Why do you hate me?” “I don’t hate you. I just don’t trust you.” “Because I make you forget about her.” “What? No.” I reared back. “Because you are full of secrets and—and temptation,” I stuttered.
“If it were only for a ruse, you wouldn’t have parted my lips with that wandering tongue. You wouldn’t have given me those little moans of pleasure. You wouldn’t have pulled me closer. Don’t pretend your thighs don’t slicken every time you think about that kiss.”
Tracing down past rough curls, I found her heat as she let out a gasp. She was wet as hell. “You can claim it’s ‘only a ruse’ all you want, but this mess tells me otherwise,”
“Oh, skies,“ she said, sounding breathless even in my mind. I didn’t think she meant to say it to me, and I smiled against her lips.
She was used to men being rough with her, and she probably deserved some gentleness. It wasn’t me who could give her that though.
My dear friend Zaph, This is the only book I could find about what you wanted. I don’t know why you’re so obsessed with the prophecy. Didn’t the original seer say it wouldn’t come to pass for another five hundred years? Maybe more? Even with the font, we might be dead before then. At the very least, we’ll be old enough we won’t be able to do much about it. As for your letter, do not be worried. He is surprisingly kind. I wish you wouldn’t be so difficult about it. And, honestly, what I do with Tannyl is none of your business, is it? You don’t see me asking about the things you do with the

who a Zaph is,
The girl who’d promptly brought me to my knees and then somehow stole whatever was left of my heart.
This capital is not big enough to put enough space between us for me to not think about you. The way you bite your thumb when you concentrate. The freckle on your right ear. The face you make when I annoy you. All the ways I have hurt you and betrayed you.”
Umbroth.
“It would seem as if saving the rest of the world came at the cost of my own happiness. And that has to be alright. Because you are alright.”
She punctuated her words with a swift kick to my shin, and I swallowed, nodding. “Alright, Elora. Alright.”
Knowing it wasn’t me who deserved peace at the moment, I did my best to comfort the woman in front of me.
expecting Irses or Ryo, come to harass me. They were on the opposite end of the capital, making use of the ample estate grounds. Behaving, I hoped.
a vile creature with long legs and arms, the body of a woman, and giant wings of a bat. Lanky blonde hair hung down in front of her face, and as she tilted her head, I realized her jaw was hung open at an awkward angle, maw twisting.
I ignored her stupid question.
I plunged my blade through its heart and twisted. Its limbs curled in upon it, not unlike a gods damn spider.
The boy stared at me, tears trickling down from eyes full of guilt. I recognized it, having seen it in Em’s eyes. ‘Why not me?’ If Em’s lingering sorrow was any indication, he’d ask the question for years.
itzki.”
“The itzkim haven’t been seen since the gods walked.
“Itzkim were conduits who stood against the gods, punished for it.
I soaked Dewalt in the process. He shot a glare at me but said nothing. I still needed my husband to teach me how to control that aspect of his divinity.
“Rhia wore her hair loose.”
“One night with me, and I will give you my armies. Come back to me after, and I will give you the world,”
“Our time is running out, Dewalt.” “It’s not fair.” Mischievous eyes met mine. “It never is, but this is the best you’re going to get. You never got to say goodbye, and you’ve been tangled up with me ever since. This is our chance.”
Lucia leaned forward, hugging me, and a small golden spot in my heart dimmed and faded as she whispered farewells I’d longed for and secrets she’d kept.
He was the last of the Umbroth line if Declan had never named an heir, and now, he would shoulder the burden of his kingdom.
