They had often heard Trump repeat Russian disinformation about Ukraine and 2016, suggesting that the hacking of Hillary Clinton’s emails was some sort of false-flag Ukrainian operation—and despite having been told this was a Russian lie, Trump publicly promoted it, just as Vladimir Putin had.
