the body becomes more proficient at manufacturing and releasing stimulants and stress hormones to counteract the effect of the alcohol. This is a perfectly natural and healthy reaction. It is the human body dealing with and countering the poisonous effects of an external substance so that we can survive it.
When someone is depressed as a result of drinking they are not depressed because of an actual reason, they are depressed because of the direct chemical reaction to the previous drinking. However, this depression causes them to dwell on anything and everything they can in their life that is negative. The hung-over mind will always find the most disturbing thing in any panorama and focus in on it.
The simple fact of the matter is that people do not become angry, introspective, unhappy, regretful, or anything else when they drink because the alcohol has brought out the true side of them, but because the alcohol has prevented their brain from acting as it ought to.
If you think that alcohol relieves anger, misery, frustration, etc., then alcoholics (who drink the most) would surely be the happiest people on the planet. Drunks would be the most calm and happy people, and those least likely to get into a fight.
The fact is that whoever you are as a drinker, it is not the real you. It is a poor quality you. It is a tired, irritable and overly emotional you. Essentially, it is not a very pleasant you.
if you are constantly anesthetising with alcohol you are never actually experiencing these negative emotions, you are never facing up to them and learning how to deal with them and becoming more resilient to them.
Alcohol doesn’t make things interesting; it makes your mind stupid so that things that would otherwise have bored it are suddenly enough to occupy it.
This tendency is exacerbated by the general fatigue drinking causes. We have less energy and enthusiasm so can’t be bothered to fill our time with a worthwhile hobby or pastime,
Don’t just think of how nice it would be to drink one drink, think of the whole picture. Think of the unpleasant feeling as the drink wears off (if you are intending to have only one drink) or the start of the whole miserable cycle.
Think of waking up in the night and lying there worrying, of getting up the next day feeling exhausted and depressed.
every time you receive a trigger, you stop, and you counter it as fully and as thoroughly as you can, taking as long as you need to. Don’t just let it float by: take the opportunity to force the lesson on your subconscious,
your mindset is such that you are only too happy to be free from the whole filthy mess, then every subconscious trigger will be the opportunity to remind yourself how lucky you are that you now have the knowledge to free yourself.
