The best part, all that masculine goodness came with a big, hard, imposing…badge.
Madison Warner Fairbanks liked this
Rolex perched on the coffee table in front of Beau, hissing periodically. Every so often, he glanced up from his cell phone to acknowledge her cat’s efforts to terrify him with a muttered, “Keep trying. I almost trembled that time.”
She smiled and softly told him, “Good day to you, Officer Detective Special Agent Ryan.” “Good day to you, Miss Ladling. I’ll be seeing you real soon. That’s a promise.”
“Jail wouldn’t be too bad for you, would it, Jane?” “Hey, you tampered with evidence, buddy.” She patted his shoulder. “You’ll be in a cell next to mine.” Another scan of the dating hopefuls. A full body shudder. “I think I’m fine with jail. Let’s turn ourselves in.”
Finally, he gifted her with a lopsided grin. “Have you found the man of your dreams yet, sweetheart?”
“Wipe the panic off your face,” he told her. “I accept your rules. We’ll keep playing will-they-or-won’t-they as long as you need. I’m right here, and I’m not going anywhere.”
She screamed over the roar of wind, the words leaving her in a rushing, endless stream. “Where are you and will you please stop whatever you’re doing immediately and tell me if someone entered the cottage and did something unspeakable to Rolex before they dug up a body or I will do murder for real?!”
“I know that look,” Conrad said with a groan. Beau groaned, too. “One or both of us is breaking a law in the next twenty-four hours, guaranteed.”
