“That’s a lot of information for a sign in sheet. I’m surprised they didn’t ask for my star sign,” she mumbled, following him as he left the reception area. “Don’t need to. You are a Virgo.” Ezra smirked as he walked ahead.

“What are you looking at?” “You.” He smiled, leaning against the door with his shoulder. “You are beautiful with your little crown on,” he said, reaching to rub a petal from her crown between his fingers.

“You don’t get to kiss me and be sweet and charming and then just throw me away like that when it suits you. I am not your plaything, Ezra.”

“I do not need someone to save me. I’m a big girl. You are not my knight in shining tin foil, Ezra. I don’t need to be babied, and I don’t need you wasting my time.”

“Maybe I just don’t want to work with you again. Maybe I don’t like you anymore.” Ezra stopped pulling when they were far enough apart, and he plucked the piece of parchment out from between the pages with the tweezers with a small breathy laugh. “Oh, you like me.” “What could possibly make you think that I like you?” Ana said as she leaned in closer to get a better look at the parchment. He stared at her with a stupid grin on his face. “Because you kissed me back.” He smirked.

She paused for a moment and then leaned to kiss his cheek and ruffle his hair. “Don’t drink so much you give yourself a hangover. We have work to do tomorrow.” Ezra looked at her when she kissed his cheek. She couldn’t tell if it was the flickering of the fire, or the wine, but he had a dumb smile on his face and his cheeks were flushed. “Good night.”

“You are staying with me. I can’t have my two little adventurers going hungry. Take a seat, dear.”

“You drew the two of cups, didn’t you?” Ana’s mouth dropped, and she spluttered at him, crossing her arms over her chest and shaking her head. “I thought those readings were supposed to be private?” “They are! I wasn’t listening, I swear,” Ezra defended, crossing his heart with his finger and opening the door. “Then how did you know?” “Because you and I make a great team, Davenport. And you like me.” He winked, then switched the light on.

“You made me all of the breakfasts.” “Well, I didn’t know what you liked,” Ezra commented, then lifted a waffle onto his plate, beginning to pile it high with cream and honey and chopped fruits.

Ezra pulled her to the corner of the room and held her against the wall, pressing his body against hers as if he was trying to push her as far into the corner as he possibly could, like he was trying to shield her from whoever was coming into the building. He turned his head away from the door and peered into her eyes, leaning close to her and pressing his index finger against her lips in indication for her to stay quiet. “Don’t say a word. Don’t flinch. Don’t move,” he whispered.

He reached for her again, but Ana raised her hand to slap him again. He caught her arm by the wrist and held it tightly when she tried to take her arm back, and he leaned in close to her face. “One. You get one.

“Sleep with me?” Ana spluttered when he made to leave, and he turned to look at her with a raised eyebrow. “In the bed, obviously. Sleep with me in the bed. I mean, sleep beside me in the bed.”

Throughout the night she had awoken periodically to make sure the mirror was still covered and that Ezra was still there. Ezra had been patient, tucking her back into his side and telling her it was okay, and she was safe, and she would fall back to sleep again, only to repeat the process over again.

“Do you trust me?” Ana squeezed his hand and wiped her cheek with the back of her other hand. “N-no, absolutely not,” she said with a small spluttering laugh.

“Did you just ask me out on a date, Miss Davenport?” Ana’s face was red up to her ears now, and she shrunk back from him out of embarrassment when he leaned closer to her. “No,” she said, shaking her head quickly, then gulped dryly when he didn’t say anything back. “Okay, maybe I did.”

They were dense, and as she moved closer to the pathway, she found that it was dark inside the forest. She paused in her walking and looked back over her shoulder at him, waiting for him to join her. “Don’t look so scared.” Ezra smirked, placing his hand on the small of her back and pushing her forward gently so she would start walking again. “There hasn’t been a wolf sighting here in years.”

I can’t put the pieces together without my partner in crime,” Ezra said, reaching to tuck some of her wet hair behind her ear.

“I am going home to try and console my mother,” he said as he walked back to her again and leaned in close to her ear, his breath hot on her neck. “If you even breathe in my town again, Ana, I’ll fucking end you. Do you believe me?”
