Sometimes I could think of nothing else. Nothing but the knowledge that I would outlive him, and it made my insides feel like they were being ripped apart.
Sometimes though, I simply lay awake next to him, breathing in his scent, my blood pounding with the awareness that I would have him for so short a time.

I couldn’t even bring myself to consider what would happen when he was no longer here, and I was left alone again. Without him. I was used to being alone, but this would be different. This would ruin me.
Danny called it my BDE pose. I had no idea what that meant, but it normally succeeded in making him come and give me some attention.

I’m not unkillable. Nothing is.” Danny quirked a brow at that. “I’m pretty sure you are, and I sleep better thinking that way, so let’s leave it at that.”
“It isn’t conditional upon you staying with me, Danny. I would still… Don’t think that if you accept, you have to stay with me. I would still give my time to you. I still want you to have it.”
“And you’re really… willing to do that? You’re getting the raw end of the deal here. You’d be…”—he swallowed—“halving what’s left of your life. For me.” That made me wheeze out a grating laugh. “Trust me, Danny, I am not getting the raw end of the deal.” I wrapped my arms tight around his middle, pulling him closer. “I get you.”
I wondered what had become of the rycke. I had reluctantly freed him from his cell at the Nebraska military base, but I hadn’t lingered to see what he would do.
He was mine. He was always supposed to be mine. I had just needed to wait for a long time to find him. But the wait had been worth it.
What if that had been me down there, huh? It was just luck I never had to come keep watch here.” I bared my teeth within my hood in a displeased snarl. He had to go and say the one fucking thing to successfully deter me from killing every soldier down there.
I thought of the soldier who had helped me to see if my world would be safe for Danny. He had been useful. I supposed.

He leaned up and kissed me, most likely to appease me. It worked.
“Danny.” I turned him toward me and cupped his face. “My sweet human. You know I love you, yes?” Danny looked uncertain—and a little suspicious. “Um, yes. I love y—” “But you were a terrible soldier,”
“You have many strengths. They’re just not the strengths that a human soldier seems to need.”
“I’m sure after twelve thousand years, not much is all that amazing anymore, huh?” He grinned over at me. “Father Time.” I huffed, moving behind him to wrap my arms around his middle, pulling him back into me. The handle of his stupid baseball bat pressed into my shoulder. “Some things are.”
“You know if I tell anyone all the sweet shit you say to me, no one’s gonna be scared of you anymore.”
“He’s not a pet. He’s my…” I struggled to think of the word. “My partner. He’s mine.”
“How would you procreate? Who would bear the young?” Danny’s face went ashen, and he turned to stare at me with wide eyes. “Orlith, please shut the fuck up,”
“Human, I find myself strangely interested in you. If you ever get sick of Wyn and his foul moods, come and find me.” Danny spluttered in disbelief. “I won’t, but… thanks?”
Danny wanted to stop and look at everything. Absolutely everything. If I didn’t love him so much, I would have already told him—several times—that not every plant or rock or bug warranted a thorough inspection and ten questions.
I hadn’t thought it was possible for a being my age to learn new skills, but Danny was certainly teaching me how to be more patient.
the thought of him falling prey to anyone who would take advantage of his gentle nature made me want to murder things. All the things.
“Get it? Monster orgasm.” “You’ve made that joke before. Several times.” “I know, and it’s still funny.”
But this is just… weird and ugly and cute.” I gazed at my sweet, strange human. I supposed I should count myself lucky that he had an unusual soft spot for ugly things.
he said in the voice he thought got him what he wanted. To be fair, it did usually work.
“He should respect me,” I couldn’t help but blurt out. “I am his elder.” I had practically raised him through his early adulthood. Insolent brat. “Wyn, you’re everyone’s elder.”
“See?” He wrapped wet arms around my neck, playing with my hair. “Isn’t this nice?” This was. The water, I couldn’t care less about.
Danny’s prick was jerking between us, the head flushed and a drop of clear fluid beading at the slit. I raked my sharp teeth over my lower lip as I stared at it. I heard Danny curse weakly, and another bead pulsed from the tip.
“You said these pools weren’t sacred!” He poked me in the stomach. “We just fucked in a religious place? You had your tongue up my ass on sacred ground?”
it suddenly felt like my life, my existence, had more meaning. More purpose. It was for him.
“Wyn.”
“I wish I… I wish I had more to give you. This doesn’t feel fair.”

“It’s not equal. You just gave me half your remaining life—thousands of years—and what I gave you in return is… nothing. A blip in time.”
“So?”
