And the way he looked at me. Jesus, take the wheel. No. Jesus, look away.
I sure as hell wasn’t one to deny my urges. If she was on board, then so was I. Rivals or not.
The fact that she could brush his behavior off and return to our task so easily told me two things. First, men who treated women this way were pigs and should be taken to slaughter. And second, she was more bewitching than I ever realized.
The fact that I’d been with her for eight hours today should’ve satisfied my senses. But it hadn’t. I needed more. So much more.
“Wow. You’ve got serious game,” I observed. “I mean, between the frowning and growling and making her feel like a leper when I suggested you watch the movie together, she’s practically in love with you.” “I hate you.”
“Just look at her.” Henry started flicking his Zippo lighter again. “She’s a goddamn angel. Why would she want to be a part of my fucked-up mess?”
I leaned closer, planting one hand on the booth above her head, the other on the table, caging her in. She didn’t move, even while her pulse quickened. I eased my lips close to her ear, inhaling her painfully hypnotic scent. “We may be rivals, Lavinia. But it doesn’t make me want to fuck your brains out any less.”
When I read Boss Ass Bitch above her number, I let out a bark of laughter. Willard jumped. Lavinia’s smile spread wide as she stared at me. “Don’t change the name,” she ordered when I looked back down at my phone screen. “Don’t plan to.”
“You’re a winner, Lavinia. You like to be on top.” I let that innuendo sink in,
“Why don’t you let me borrow yours, Blackwater?” she asked sweetly, her gaze dropping to my crotch conspicuously. “But only if it’s big enough. I wonder if it would meet my standards.” “Why don’t you come on over and find out.” The words flew out of my mouth without me thinking twice.
“A snake eating its tail?” “It’s the ouroboros. The ancient symbol of the cycle of life. Life, death, eternal renewal.”
“I know the ouroboros sign.” I grinned. “In some religions, the snake is a phallic symbol. A fertility sign.” His mouth quirked on one side. “Thinking about my penis again, Lavinia?”
“What is this?” “What do you mean?” “This heavy flirting thing you’ve got going on.” “I apologize. I wasn’t aware that you weren’t aware of what flirting means.” “That’s not what I meant.” “Then explain more clearly.”
“Also, loquacious?” I arched a brow. “Trying to impress me with your big vocabulary?” “Since you’re unwilling to check out my big cock, I thought it second best.”
“Are you the spiderman?” I asked, our breaths mingling, mouths inches apart. “No, Lavinia.” He shook his head then dipped closer to me. I was sure he would kiss me, but he skimmed his nose along my jaw until his lips brushed my ear. “You are,” he grated, biting my lobe. “And I’m so fucking caught in your web.”
She was driving me to delicious madness.
“Take the time you need to settle this in your mind, Lavinia,” I told her with sincere earnest. “But know this. I won’t stop until I have you in my bed.” And then I’d never let her leave. She had me utterly bewitched. Body and soul. I couldn’t walk away.
“But how do I know she’s the one?” “How do you know she’s not?” she snapped back. “Are you willing to let her go and never find out?”
I couldn’t help but smile. Then I proceeded to talk about my favorite subject all the way through dinner, wearing a stupid smile I couldn’t seem to, and didn’t care to, wipe off my face.
“How about a shower?” I asked softly. “Yes. Then you feed me.” “Anything you want.” And I meant it. She could’ve asked for all of my wealth, my house, even Queenie—well, maybe we’d have to share Queenie—and I’d have given it to her.
Never had I been more grateful or felt more blessed than in this place and time as I held Lavinia Lenore Savoie in my arms.
“Let me guess,” I said to Dev. “The girl is resistant to the monstrous god, but he woos her any way.” “Woos is a kind interpretation,” added Dev. “Kidnapping is more accurate.”
“What do you do when you’re sad?” “I get angry and want to break things.” “What about when you’re angry?” “I bake something chocolate?” He smiled wider. “I know. I’m weird,” I admitted with a huff. He clasped my neck and drew me close. “You’re wonderful,” he breathed against my lips before placing a soft kiss there.
“Dinner for my girl.” “How did you do this?” “I paid Sean a lot of money.” I laughed. “Did he cook for you too?” “Hell no. That boy can’t cook. I did.
“You know protection spells aren’t like bullet-proof shields, right?” “Yes. But a protection spell might give you some warning of danger or veer you onto a safer path.” He smiled when I looked up at him. “I’ll do anything to protect you as best I can.”
“You are my heart, Lavinia. Without you, there is no life worth living.”
“We loved with a love that was more than a love.” Gareth & Lavinia
“You are my mate. I sensed it from the start. Though I couldn’t identify why you were driving me near madness, the monster knew. And when you gave yourself to him, to me, I was sure of it.”
“So you’re basically breaking the grim code or laws or whatever to be with me?” “Lavinia. I’d break the whole world to be with you.”
“You,” I shook my head, tears pricking at the sudden agony and fear barreling through me, “you took my magic away.” My voice broke at the heartbreak of it. The empty, gaping hole where my magic shone like a beacon only a minute before.
Basically, the supernatural courtroom was Vegas. What happened there, stayed there.
She squeezed her hand over my crotch, making me grunt. Then she grinned. “Thank you for being a gentleman. Tonight, I need you to be very ungentlemanly.” “Done.”
