“This is…” “You,” Zeke said from right behind me. “I had a feeling that it was all you.”
I watched Zeke come to life right before my eyes just from engaging in silly banter with his brother. His eyes brightened, lips turned up into a beautiful smile that displayed deep dimples in his cheeks. It was right then that he unknowingly gave me a glimpse of the real him. I knew that I wanted to see it again, and when the time came, I wanted it to be because of me.
I wanted him to knowingly come to life for me.
“I think I’m going to love it here.” “Yeah,” I agreed, nodding. “I think you will.” And maybe I’ll get you to like me too.
He nodded while caressing the hand he was still holding on to.
He felt like home to me, and no place had ever felt that way before; no man had ever made me feel that way just from a simple hug. None of it made sense because I barely knew him.
“Zeke,” she called breathlessly. “Yeah?” “Will you kiss me?”
“You should know that doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will,” I said, bringing my lips closer. “I’m the last person to be telling you how to feel, but do me a favor and kill the doubt.” “Can I be scared?” I nodded and brushed my lips against hers. “It’s okay to be scared. Being scared means, you’re about to do something really brave.”
“This…” she pulled away and dropped her head onto my chest. Her body trembled in my hold, and I tightened my fingers around her waist. “I don’t know what to make of this.” “Me either,” I whispered into her forehead. “But I do know that I want to make something of it.” I really fucking wanted to make something of it.
The enthusiasm in her gaze when she talked about her love for reading, the way her eyes opened and closed while seeming to be in a dream-like state.
It was beautiful; she was beautiful.
She did that to me; brought smiles out of me.
“Now, what should I wear?” “Yellow,” I said. “Wear anything as long as it’s yellow.” “Well…” her eyes glimmered. “It is my signature color.” “That it is.”
I couldn’t think straight when our eyes were connected, and right now, I needed a hot second to think.
“You bought me roses,” I murmured, stepping out onto the porch. “Yellow roses.” He shrugged. “I thought you’d want something to brighten up the place on your first day. Something that really made it feel like it was yours.”
“I like your hair up,” I said. “Helps me to see every inch of your face.”
“Why does it feel like our minds and bodies are further than we are in this? Like we’re simply being caught up on what’s going to be?” “Chemistry between two people is the strangest science of all.”
“You’re beautiful.” I reached out and gently wrapped my fingers around the back of her neck, not caring that the pilot was near. “I thought that the first time we met and couldn’t take my eyes off you.”
“Never met a pretty girl before?” “I’ve met plenty, but never one that shook the foundation I stand on.”
“Zeke…” “Yeah, baby?” Her eyes slowly tracked back into my direction. “I’ve never met a man that shook the foundation I stood on either.”
“I’m a lot of things, Nae,” he said, using my nickname and tipping his head at me. “But remember, I’m a man first. A man who is beyond attracted to you—who would take the chance to fuck you if allowed.”
“From the moment we met, a part of me I thought was lost has been finding its way through those cracks you created in my foundation. I want to spill all of my deepest darkest secrets to you. It’s becoming clearer to me with every day that passes.”
“How do you know that?” “Know what?” I asked, blinking. She looked at me oddly, in a way that Jonae never would. “That I’m not Jonae,” she said. “Your eyes.” At that, she frowned. “My eyes?” “Yeah, she looks at me like I hung the sun.” I looked at her attire and added, “You are wearing orange.”
“No one has ever looked at me in the way that you do.”
“I won’t treat you any differently,” I told him. “And if I’m confused about something, I will ask before assuming.” “That’s all I’ll ever ask of you.” “It’s okay if you ask more of me,” I whispered as my eyes drooped. “I want to give you everything, so ask me for anything.”
“He already loves you.” I let her words take root inside of my chest and then said, “I deserve that.”
Making her feel good was now a top priority for me, in and out of the bedroom.
“Once I bare my soul to you, there’s no giving me back,” she whispered, staring up at me. “I never planned on giving you back in the first place.” I tipped my head to the side. “Bare all, Jo.”
If I hadn’t known it before, I knew it now; I belonged to Izekiel Holloway. My heart was his. My body was his.
“Just can’t get over the fact that you’re mine,” he said, tipping my head back with his index finger. “Beautiful self.”
He cupped my face, his eyes dancing over my features like he was memorizing what I looked like. It was something he often did, something that I’d grown to adore because I knew that he wasn’t memorizing me but that he was mesmerized by me.
