Sitting side by side with the food in front of them and the magnificent view of the valley stretched out before them they made their cracker creations. Soon it turned into a competition to see who could make the highest edible tower without dropping anything. This caused lots of laughter and Evie found Aurora was not above cheating. Aurora ‘accidentally’ knocked her elbow at a critical moment causing cracker, pickles, cheese and a precariously balanced onion sliver atop a piece of tomato to fall inside her shirt. Watching her fish it all out of her bra had Aurora laughing so hard she ended up

the tone shifts in this book are wild, like we started with a brutal mutilation chamber and now they're making charcuterie boards and doing a porn food fight
“This is so good. I think you’re right and the salted caramel is the best but the nutty chocolate was also very good and of course the plain one too.”
let's take the time out of this story to talk about our favorite chocolate flavors, not like we urgently need to develop our plot or characters or anything
“How can you eat so much in general?” Evie countered. “You eat like a horse.” “Why like a horse?” “They graze constantly and eat lots.” “Hmm, but unlike a horse I have never eaten grass. Well, not deliberately. I once face planted and ended up with a mouth full but I spat that out straight away along with the dirt so it doesn’t count as eating it.”
“What you did in the village, the way you changed just your hands, that was a partial shift. Only the Old Bloods, the direct descendants of the first shapeshifters can do that. So…that must mean that you are an Old Blood?”
jee whiz wish we'd had time to develop this lore throughout the story... if only we hadn't been so preoccupied with making cracker sandwhiches
It didn’t take her long to realize that it wasn’t only poor technique at fault; Evie simply had a lot less magic. Aurora was so used to her own magic being easily accessible and available in abundance that it had never occurred to her Evie would have so little to work with. Whereas her own magic was like a deep, flowing river it was like Evie was pumping by hand from a small well deep underground. To make matters worse the well wasn’t refilling quickly and magic trickled into it painstakingly slow. It saddened Aurora to see her friend struggle so hard with something that came to her as easily

imagine if we'd gotten some worldbuilding about how magic was imbued in shifters and how it got watered down outside of Old Blood clans... and maybe some more stakes over Evie needing to shift rather than having this happen when they are literally just hanging out and have no urgency at all
When the idea came to her it was so simple she was astounded it could be that easy. All she had to do was take a thread of her own magic, weave it into the walls of Evie’s little reservoir and imbue it with the command to draw magic. That was it. She couldn’t give Evie more magic or a bigger reservoir but she could speed up her regeneration of magic so she didn’t have to wait so long and work so hard to get to it. The spell would respond to how often Evie shifted, so the more she did it the quicker it would refill Evie’s reservoir.
“Did I hurt you, Evie?” “No. It is, however, a very sensitive area.” The way Evie put emphasis on the word ‘sensitive’ made Aurora think she had meant to use an entirely different word so she carefully removed her hand. As soon as she did Evie withdrew her wing.
“As you’ve probably guessed already she is also an Old Blood. Like my father she too is a direct descendant of the first shapeshifters. Her family was one of the first families that accidentally sailed into Nordarra millennia ago. In those days all of Nordarra was full of great and terrible beasts and old powerful magic. In comparison, humans were weak like little children in the land of giants. The beings who built the ancient structures took pity on them and taught them how to use the magic of the land to become shapeshifters. At least that’s one version of the story. Another version states

Crazy lore dump... almost half-way through the book and we're getting the main worldbuilding of the story. Also I hate when authors dump lore that is supposed to be well-known in-universe
Aurora took hold of Evie’s wing with one hand, her grip so firm Evie doubted she could pull her wing away if she tried. The nails on the other hand darkened and grew. Using the nail on her thumb Aurora made a small cut over the wing joint then used the first two fingers of her hand, now shaped like sharp-tipped tweezers, to bore into the cut. Evie felt when Aurora latched onto something lodged in her flesh and started to pull. There was a sucking sound as Aurora extracted a bloody piece of bone about four inches long. Evie pulled a face when Aurora held out the bone shard for her to take so

This is fresh fish, not a half-rotten carcass washed up on shore and I’ve fed them this kind before so they remember the flesh is tasty.” “Even raw?” “Have you never had sashimi?” “Ah...I see your point. Although I prefer it with condiments.” “Who doesn’t? A good dipping sauce makes everything taste better, even raw fish.”
there's sashimi in this universe??????? does this imply the existence of all-you-can sushi? also why are they talking about dipping sauces right now
The maps were not of Nordarra as she’d expected. They were of places in the human world she’d only heard of; Africa, Asia, America. All places on the other side of the portal in the ocean a few miles from Porta Belua that allowed trade and flow of people between the two worlds.
literally only now realizing we are in a separate world that exists alongside Earth and is apparently accessible through a portal???? I feel like this should have been introduced earlier???
Aurora had just gone from 0 to 200 miles an hour in about five minutes flat. Breaking the kiss she leaned back against the desk trying to get a better look to confirm her dawning suspicion. Aurora’s pupils were too wide, like dark deep pools, and her cheeks were flushed crimson. “Aurora, are you all right?” “Why? Didn’t you like the kiss?” Then Aurora giggled. It was a bubbly girly giggle so unlike her normal laughter it set off all Evie’s remaining warning bells. “How about it, hmm? You did say you wanted to be kissed and dined first before I go down on my knees between yours. Now I’ve done

“Why would she leave me clothing? We haven’t met and how did she even know to bring it?” “You are here with me and we were having sex so she thinks we’re a couple. That’s her way of saying hello. Sweet of her really. As for where she got the clothing? She has an area here that’s just hers. She stays there when she’s visiting me or passing through the area. My mother likes to collect pretty and interesting things. That flight gear must have caught her eye and has probably been semi-forgotten in one of the storerooms. It’s amazing she had something in your exact size but she’s always been into

the odds of her mom having a random ass flight jacket that perfectly fit evie... also this trait of collecting stuff is never brought up beyond now when it is convenient to the plot
“I’m sad because it just hit me that I won’t be here for the twins’ next birthday party and I might never feel Tove’s little hands on my face again. I’m going to miss them.”
Shes literally never mentioned them before but we're supposed to believe she is so deeply connected to them... also they never come up again
The meeting hall, like most of the buildings she’d seen in the village of Ingvild, was made from blocks of hewn stone fitted so snugly she couldn’t see any gaps. Clearly the work of skilled stonemasons.
First, weve already been in thjis village fir at leazstf one ch and this is the first description were gettibg. Second, in a workd with magic and alsi xars, is this so impressive?
“That’s from a blue razorback and where there’s one there is probably a mate as well because they mate for life. You do not want these things nesting in your backyard. They’re like giant lizards with spikes, they are carnivorous, not fussy about what they eat and they breed quickly. To top things off they are very aggressive. They will think nothing of attacking and eating a grown man never mind a child playing in the wrong place.”
new plot!!! now we're going on mission to kill a new monster and also this has nothing to do with the main plot
