Fina frowned in confusion, then let out that horse-startling laugh.
I reassured him southern ladies are not meant for travel like this and we had probably just broken you, is all.”
Maybe the south is more interesting than I thought. You have too many rules, so of course they are broken often.”
Mordred let out a noncommittal noise. “It is my continual prayer that none of us get what we deserve in this life.”
“Hush, you wretched girl, or I will make all your hair fall out using my magic.” “Try it and I will make all your blood fall out. Using my ax.”
“Needles. They dip the needle in dye and then pierce the skin. The dye settles in.” “Forever?” “The markings change as you age, but that is part of the beauty. Your history, told on your skin.”
Wandering and lost were not the same thing. She would think of herself not as lost but as wandering. It certainly felt more romantic and less desperately lonely that way.
For so long after he had hurt her, she thought her only options were to forgive him completely or hate him completely. But now she knew she could hold the wrongness of what he had done and at the same time forgive him, because people were so much more than the worst things they did. She had to believe that, otherwise how could she move through the world carrying the guilt of the harm she had done?
Fina nodded. “All right, tell me what to do. I would prefer not to murder anyone, but I am ready for mischief.”
