Kit imagined what it would be like to be able to unburden himself to Percy, and even for Percy to be able to do the same to Kit. It felt out of reach, miles away from their tentative alliance, miles away from what they had done together the previous night. But he wanted it, and he thought Percy did, too. He didn’t know if they’d manage it, but Kit intended to try.
It was, arguably, ungenerous of Percy to put too much stock into what Kit had said at that moment.
And that was something Percy had never even contemplated—the possibility that someone could be cross with him but also fond of him.
He had been little more than a boy then, and hadn’t known how rare and precious that sort of feeling was. Now he was jaded enough to know that most people never knew what it was like to take a walk side by side with the person they liked best in the world.
