I only consider the screen up there, and the whole film, to me, should be on paper from beginning to end—shot by shot, cut by cut—and each cut should mean something. . . . What is cinema? The assembly of pieces of film to create an idea . . . it’s the only new art of the twentieth century, but it is essentially a visual art.
