Rose drums her fingers on the bar counter. “I’m not ashamed. It’s the one day of the year dedicated to me, so if three-hundred-and-sixty-four days fail to live up to my standards, I still have this one.”
I hear the glass door open and shut, but I don’t turn to see which sorry person has decided to spend extra time with me. “Do you remember the Cayman Islands trip?” Lily asks, staring at the water in reverence.
the two teenagers are still there, snickering. I flip them off. Lily notices it and copies the gesture. With both hands. From Lil, in a Marvel onesie with a flower crown hooked around her wrist, it’s hardly threatening. But it’s goddamn adorable. I feel like we’re seventeen again. The best seventeen. Where every time I stared at Lily Calloway, I wanted to drop to my knees.
“If I open this door, will you promise to walk to the nursery and not run?” “Promise.” I hold up my pinky, and instead of hooking his with mine, he kisses me on the lips.
“I love you,” I tell him. He’s my teammate. My sidekick. The person I want to tag in for every tough moment in my life. My very own Scott Summers.
“Love,” I breathe, my heart aching. I hug her closer, melding her small, wiry frame to my body. And my lips brush her ear. “You and me.” She chokes on a laugh. “Lily and Lo.”
“Try lorenhellion,” he breathes. I do, and a green checkmark shows that it’s available. Daisy chooses @daisyonmeadows, a silly pun that’s also a little flirtatious. It suits her.
“It’s yours, little brother. I believe in you.” For months, those last four words are all I’ve ever wanted to hear. From Ryke, they mean everything to me.
I can’t tell you the day that I fell in love with you because there wasn’t a single day that I didn’t.”
“You have the purest parts of my heart, and I’m certain that in every alternate universe, I’m always, always in love with you.”
