That’s part of the problem. I don’t know if there was a better way.
Yeah, you do, don’t gaslight yourself or your reader. This was a fully loaded dog gun and now you are trying to walk it back and it would be better to respect the character and the reader by having her accept that someone she loved made an absolutely terrible judgement call bc he was scared, and that she still loves him anyway

“There, there,” she says after a moment. “Tell me who I can stab for you.”
“Indeed,”

but clearly Lilith has no limit.
And honestly that is the issue with this series beyond the curse. The Lilith of the first book was the originator of the curse but also somehow bound by it, and therefore limited — I could suspend disbelief and roll with whatever defeats she faced bc of that limitation. The Lilith beyond the first book is limited solely by her own pride and desires; it is difficult to suspend disbelief without some external limitations
