“You’re wrong. I’m not trying to impress you. I want you to see me.” “Why?” I reached out with my magical senses. “We just met.” “And when we did, the earth opened up beneath my feet.”
“There once was a wolf from the city, who met a witch who was stunning and witty.” His voice was low and luscious and gruff. “She charmed him at a glance, making him wish he had a chance, to kiss her sweet lips and her kitty.”
“Last one. Third card is for our relationship.” I flipped over the last card and laughed bitterly at the Tower card, a crumbling one with flames shooting out of the windows and the spire. It meant upheaval and chaos.
Not necessarily a bad thing. It just means big change. Having a relationship at all would be a big upheaval for Violet
“Am I really that much of a heinous troll?” “Yes.” She beamed, squishing my cheeks between her palms and saying in baby-talk, “But you’re my heinous troll.”
I was the kind of woman who typically followed my instincts and spontaneous desires, never denying to sit on a pretty face when I wanted to. And let’s be real, Nico had a face worth sitting upon.
These guys had no idea what I was capable of, and I preferred it that way. Let them think that they were the actual threat and not me. Made things easier.
“Look. I’m well aware that it’s a sad admission that my longest-standing relationship has been with an ornery rooster.”
I couldn’t help but smile when she said she was going to conquer the world because, one, I believed her and two...two... I wanted Violet Savoie with every leaden beat of my besotted heart.
I didn’t move. Didn’t respond. Didn’t take the opening he was offering me. Why? Because he was right. I was running. And I didn’t fucking know what to do. His primal, possessive look screamed words like heart and soul and forever. But that psychic warning I’d received in that reading a year ago kept haunting me.
Death did mean endings. But what it also meant, which I’d failed to see, was change and transformation. Indeed, my life had been going through transformation. Even when I’d first pulled the card, I’d been on the path to opening my shop and changing things. But this wasn’t even about that. This was about changing my life to include him.
The Three of Swords reflected Nico’s heartache, which I’d caused by my constant rejection of him when he so obviously wanted me all along.
The Tower, the symbol for our relationship, could’ve meant chaos and upheaval as I’d thought all along. But my magic whispered that I’d misinterpreted that as well. The Tower also meant revelation. Awakening.
“Such a bad liar.” “I hate you.” “Still lying.” “Stop talking and fucking kiss me.” “There’s my girl.”
“Yeah? What do I taste like?” He fisted my hair and turned my head so we were nose to nose, mouth to mouth. Something primitive sparked in those electric eyes before he rumbled, “Like mine.”
“Was that for luck?” I whispered when she pulled back, still holding my face. “No. That’s because I wanted to kiss your fine face.”
“No part of you could be a monster. I don’t care what you say. Your wolf is part of you, so I—” she stammered and cleared her throat—“I care for him as much as I do you.”
“Do you want to be my one and only?” I asked, voice rumbling rough as rock. She pulled back, her face inches from mine. Her heart beat wildly in her chest, like a panicked bird’s wings. “Yes.” She licked her lips nervously. “And I want you to be mine.”
For the first time in my life, I wanted to pour my heart out to a guy. It had me a little giddy.
“Oh, baby,” I soothed, dragging his face closer so he could see me clearly when I said, “I love you, too.” I pressed a kiss to his wet lips, whispering against them. “I so do.”
“I was so in love with you.” I closed my eyes, admitting words that had terrified me months ago and now only made my heart soar with bliss. “The whole time.” I opened my eyes to make sure she heard me. “And it might’ve taken you two years to figure out what I already knew, but I would’ve waited longer for you.”
