Again and again, my mind found its way to him.
There are some things that can’t be carved from a person, no matter how far from home they’ve sailed.
“Because I can’t lose them. And I can’t lose you.”
The night sea stretched out around the Marigold like a black chasm, melting into a clear, dark sky.
“What else is he willing to do for you, Fable?”
I’d loved him with the same fire that I’d hated him.
I could only hope that what they could gain would outweigh what they could lose.
What else is he willing to do?
“I’m not one more person you have to take care of. You have to stop doing that.” “I don’t know how to,” he admitted.
“Fable, I love you,” he breathed, still staring at my feet. “I don’t want to do any of this without you.”
“I’m afraid that you’re going to want what she can give you. What I’ll never be able to give you.”
“I think maybe he hated that he loved her,” I whispered.
It doesn’t matter what happens.” His hands tightened on me. “You and me.”
but whatever happened tomorrow, we were sailing into it together. You and me.
But Isolde had done it, so there had to be a way.
And I couldn’t help but think that she’d kept it, maybe for me. That maybe she’d given me my name so that one day, I’d find it.
