Kym pursed her lips and nodded. “If you need me to set you up, I know someone you might like.” “So, you’ve been holding out on me?” Retta asked, squinting.
“Donut be a stranger,” she called out. Duncan looked back in time to catch her wince. “I’ll forget that one too,” he said. “Fourth favorite person,” she replied.
“Less what?” “Grumpy. Less grumpy,” Duncan said, patting his friend on the back. “Please eat something.” In one swift motion, Anthony grabbed the pastries still in Duncan’s hand and placed them in his mouth. “I meant literally anything else.”
“Let’s do it,” he said. While holding the bird plushie, he removed his jacket and handed it to her. “For your hair.”
“Don’t drop me,” she whispered. Duncan moved her backward and bent into his left leg. “No chance.”
Duncan took a shallow breath. “If you keep looking at me like that, we’re gonna be in trouble, and we don’t want that.”
But all Retta could focus on were the tiny sparks that would skate over her skin every time some part of her body grazed Duncan’s.
In response, she grabbed the back of his head. He needed to grow out his hair a bit, he decided then. Feeling her grip tighten around his coils would be his priority.
“Who are we fooling?” She frowned. “M-my family?” “No, what I mean is we’re ridiculous for thinking this isn’t going to happen.” He leaned in close. “I want it. That pretty pussy of yours wants it. And when it happens, we’ll go slow and be as loud as we want.”
“Duncan Gilmore. Retta’s boyfriend.”
“Are we doing this couple thing wrong?” Duncan whispered, leaning in as if he was about to press his nose to Retta’s. “Don’t you dare,” she said, her tense smile still in place.
“Look at the fucking view,” she said, squirming under his touch. Looking at her, he said, “I am.”
“Oh, I get it. I mince my words all the time. That’s why I aggressively journal,”
“Maybe she’s worth the attempt,” Anthony said,
Before Anthony closed the door behind himself, he said, “The good thing is, next time you’ll know better.”
“Can,” his sister whispered to him from the side of her mouth, “I expect a friend and family discount at a certain bakery soon?”
“yes.”
The resounding ring of the bell as she closed the door made her feel like she’d finally shut that chapter in her life. Now for the new one.
She tasted of sugar and ginger, and he poured every ounce of longing from the past weeks into his caresses. He broke their kiss to look into her eyes.
“Good. I wasn’t a big fan of my girl being in love with someone else.”
“Your girl? It’s day one,” she said, laughing lightly. “Nah, day one started the moment you thought I was your date at that coffee shop.”
“Deal. And you’re in luck, I happen to have a really good scone recipe at home.”
