Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth. OSCAR WILDE
The guy in the blue mask seemed to stare right at me, and it felt like my heart stopped. Without a shadow of a doubt, I knew it was Carter. I edged closer to the chain-link fence, trying to stay out of his sight. The sirens suddenly stopped. His attention was locked on me. He ran. I did, too.
“Two halves, so different, yet the same. Trick him once, and you have much to gain. The gain will not come without a cost. Can you hold on when hope is lost?”
“Are you willing to pay the price? Trick him once, but don’t trick him twice.”
“There’s something about you, something different to the other girls I know. I already know I want more than just tonight.”
“You can want me, but you can never have me. Watch your back, little trickster.”
“One hides behind a mask. One has a secret. Beware the false one. You will lose your heart if you do not heed the warning signs.”
The same boots she’d worn at Fright Night. How could I hate and want someone so much? Why the fuck couldn’t I want someone else? Anyone else. Someone my dad didn’t see as perfect, someone who hadn’t lied to me and pretended to be someone she wasn’t.
“Raine…” My grip tightened. “Do it.” Those two words snapped the final thread of my control.
“I go so fucking crazy around you, Raine. You’re no good for me. I don’t trust myself when I’m around you.” His voice grew even lower. “I don’t like who I am around you.”

“So fucking gorgeous,” he said softly, his voice so low that I could barely hear him.
table. I took him in. Standing there in front of me, his hair all mussed up and his body decorated with splats of paint, he suddenly looked playful. And that smile…his smile. It gave me full-on butterflies.
“So fucking beautiful.”
Hope was a dangerous thing, as I soon found out. Everything had changed, but nothing had changed.
away? I had so many questions, but what I did know was that if he wanted something, I wasn’t going to settle. If he wanted me, he was the one that needed to make the decision to be with me properly. The ball was in his court, now.
I’d be fucking lucky to have her. What was I doing? I wanted Raine Laurent. I wanted her to be mine.
“Yeah. Watching their team captain kiss the fuck out of his girlfriend.”
“I’m your boyfriend. You’re mine now, little trickster.”
I’d burn the world down for her. Why the fuck had I pushed her away? Let my own issues fuck everything up? If I’d got my shit together sooner, maybe we wouldn’t be here right now.
“Yeah. I love you. You. Raine Laurent.”
