“You know what my feelings are towards you? Indifferent. In order to hate you, I’d have to care about you. You’re nothing to me. Insignificant.”

“Two halves, so different, yet the same. Trick him once, and you have much to gain. The gain will not come without a cost. Can you hold on when hope is lost?” At her foreboding, low chant, a whole-body shiver ran through me, and I froze in place, unable to tear my gaze away from hers. She moved her hand from Carter’s arm to my own, her long, blood-red talons gripping me firmly, and pulled me closer. Her voice dropped to a whispered warning. “Are you willing to pay the price? Trick him once, but don’t trick him twice.”

“I didn’t mean to.” I felt him swallow hard against me, and then he was speaking again, his voice so low that I had to strain to hear it. “I go so fucking crazy around you, Raine. You’re no good for me. I don’t trust myself when I’m around you.” His voice grew even lower. “I don’t like who I am around you.”

Hope was a dangerous thing, as I soon found out. Everything had changed, but nothing had changed.

“What if I make everything worse or completely fuck things up? What if she becomes even more of a target? What if I lose everything?” The words spilled out of me before I could censor them. “Forget those what-ifs for a minute. What if you gain something worth losing everything else for?” Her voice softened, and she reached out to touch my arm. “Is Raine worth the risk? Only you can decide that.”
