Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth. Oscar Wilde
The guy in the blue mask seemed to stare right at me, and it felt like my heart stopped. Without a shadow of a doubt, I knew it was Carter. I edged closer to the chain-link fence, trying to stay out of his sight. The sirens suddenly stopped. His attention was locked on me. He ran. I did, too.
As the sirens stopped, my gaze was drawn to Poison Ivy. Ready or not, here I come,
“Two halves, so different, yet the same. Trick him once, and you have much to gain. The gain will not come without a cost. Can you hold on when hope is lost?”
“Are you willing to pay the price? Trick him once, but don’t trick him twice.”
“I can’t believe I’m doing this. What kind of influence are you having on me?” “Don’t you like being my little deviant for the night?”
“You can want me, but you can never have me. Watch your back, little trickster.”
“One hides behind a mask. One has a secret. Beware the false one. You will lose your heart if you do not heed the warning signs.”
“Raine…” My grip tightened. “Do it.” Those two words snapped the final thread of my control.
“I go so fucking crazy around you, Raine. You’re no good for me. I don’t trust myself when I’m around you.” His voice grew even lower. “I don’t like who I am around you.”
Xavier owned me with his kiss, but Carter obliterated me.
“Are you gonna tell me what you want, Rai?” My eyes flew to his in shock. “Y-you called me Rai.” He pressed closer. “I did.”
“Fuck, Rai. You’re so sexy when you come for me.”
Hope was a dangerous thing, as I soon found out. Everything had changed, but nothing had changed.
If only we could choose who we fell for. Life would be so much easier.
“The gain will not come without a cost. Can you hold on when hope is lost?”
“Both light and darkness lie ahead. Your path is shrouded with hidden dread. The question that you need to ask… What is hidden beneath his mask?”
I’d be fucking lucky to have her. What was I doing? I wanted Raine Laurent. I wanted her to be mine.
“Yeah. Watching their team captain kiss the fuck out of his girlfriend.”
“I’m your boyfriend. You’re mine now, little trickster.”
“When Carter wants something, he goes all out.”
“I trust you.” A real smile finally appeared on her lips, and I kissed her again. “I’d do anything to keep you safe.”
“Bet you were thinking it, though.” “Maybe. You know I like your sadistic tendencies.”
“I’ve created a monster.” “Yeah, you have.”
“Oh baby, you can’t run from me. I’ll always find you.”
“My little trickster. You tricked me, right here.” “I’d trick you again, if it meant we’d end up like this,” she murmured softly. She trailed off on a moan as I dragged my fingers roughly along her wetness. “I’d let you trick me twice. You’re mine now.”
“I want to go bare inside you, skin to skin. I want to feel all of you. Right here, right now. Is that okay? I’m clean.” She bit her lip, then nodded. “I really want that. I’m clean, too. I mean, you know that. It’s only ever been you.” “It will only ever be me.”
“Harder, Carter. Fuck me so hard I feel you tomorrow.”
“Fucking hell, Rai, look at you, here, my cum all over you. No one else will ever see this sight, not now you’re mine.”
“Restraints?” Her head shot up, a glimmer of interest chasing away the sadness in her eyes. “Yeah. You heard right.” “Do I get to tie you up?” Her voice was playful as we made our way back through the park towards my truck. “Nope. These are strictly for me to restrain you.” “And what are you going to do when you’ve got me at your mercy?” “Whatever I want.”
“You know I love you, right?” “What?” My shocked whisper was echoed next to me, as Xavier, who was eavesdropping and not even being subtle about it, stared between us both. Carter’s lips curved into a blinding smile. “Yeah. I love you. You. Raine Laurent.” Suddenly, he was standing up and cupping his hands around his mouth, shouting out for everyone to hear. “I love Raine Laurent!” “Carter, sit down now!”
“You love me?” I drew back and stared up at him. “Yeah. A whole fucking lot.” I smiled. “I love you.” He gave me a wide grin. “I know.”
