The guy in the blue mask seemed to stare right at me, and it felt like my heart stopped. Without a shadow of a doubt, I knew it was Carter. I edged closer to the chain-link fence, trying to stay out of his sight. The sirens suddenly stopped. His attention was locked on me. He ran. I did, too.
I ruled them all. And that was the way it was going to stay. Until one girl ruined it.
She didn’t need to know that her presence made me feel out of control, that she got under my skin like nothing else, and I hated it. The best thing for both of us was for her to stay as far away from me as possible.
I’d lost all rationality when it came to that girl.
“Two halves, so different, yet the same. Trick him once, and you have much to gain. The gain will not come without a cost. Can you hold on when hope is lost?”
“Are you willing to pay the price? Trick him once, but don’t trick him twice.”
“Really?” I heard the scepticism in his tone. “Are you sure?” “Never mind. It was only a suggestion.” I turned away from the Ferris wheel and began walking in the direction of the shooting gallery. Carter stopped me with a hand on my arm. “If that’s what you want to do, we’ll do it.”
“I need your number. And your name.” He released his grip on my throat, sliding both his arms around my waist. “There’s something about you, something different to the other girls I know. I already know I want more than just tonight.”
