“Don’t be polite,” Kieran remarked. “It weirds me out.”
“So, the whole static charge thing,”
“I want to see if it happens again.”
“Do you feel anything?”
“No.”
Something… something different happened the moment my fingers sank into Beckett’s soft fur.
“You look like moonlight,”
“It’s just you look…adorably confused, and now you look adorably violent.”
“Will be shocked and probably greatly annoyed that I have married someone they have never laid eyes on, not to mention someone who is only half-Atlantian and was once the Maiden,”
“But as soon as they get to know her, none of that will matter. They will come to love her as fiercely as I do.”
“But not convincing enough.”
“Malik and I spent endless hours and days trying to map them out, but we never found the tunnels that passed through the mountains.”
“You have a condition now?”
“Can you agree to that?”
“Always,”
“Yes.”
“I wouldn’t want you unnecessarily wet, Princess.”
“You look like you could use a drink.” Delano offered the bottle of brown liquid he held. “It’s whiskey.”
“Tastes like horse piss,” Naill said. “Fair warning.”
“I don’t know what horse piss tastes like, but I’m sure that’s a good comparison.”
“No promises.”
“Do you need something?”
“If you’re suggesting what I think you are, I am going to stab you in the heart again.”
“Don’t tempt me with empty promises.”
It was because he made me feel seen, and he made me feel alive even when I genuinely wanted to cause physical harm to him.
He didn’t have pieces of me. He had my whole heart, and he had from the moment he allowed me to protect myself, from the moment he stood beside me instead of in front of me.
“There’s something innately wrong with the idea of being stabbed and then having to clean up my own blood.”
You’re beautiful, Poppy.”
“You’re beautiful.”
“Both halves, and
you
“But you’re comfortable, Princess, and you make me feel…well, you just make me feel.”
“I liked that better, to be honest.”
“She speaks the truth. And you’re the first person to ever impress her. I’m jealous.”
“Blessed be the gods, someone mark the date and time. She just admitted I was right.”
I needed to be your first everything. Kiss. Touch. Pleasure.”
“The night in New Haven, when I came to your room, I didn’t plan that. I wanted it. Gods, did I ever. It was all I could think about it seemed, and damn if that wasn’t a fucking difference, but I didn’t plan to do that with you when you had no idea who I was.”
“Because it makes me want to strip you naked and sink so deep in you that neither of us will know where we start and end.”
“Tell me what that means. Please.”
“Berries—strawberries? I’ve felt that from Vikter—from Ian and my parents. But I’ve never felt it like this—like it’s more decadent somehow.”
“Let’s make a deal that we don’t borrow tomorrow’s problems today.”
“Penellaphe Balfour?”
“Yes. I will give you the honor of becoming my husband, because you’re already worthy of me.”
“I will marry you.” I dipped down, kissing his forehead. “Today.”
“You should be grateful. You won’t be distracted tonight.”
“Still a little disappointed.”
“Stay close to them, Penellaphe. The magic in these mountains has a way of getting under your skin. Trust them but be wary of trusting what your eyes and ears tell you.”
“Returning to their place of rest.”
and it was strange to see Beckett in his mortal form and so subdued as we eventually continued on.
“Tears of an angry god,”
