“You are a second daughter,”
“Not a Maiden but Chosen nonetheless.”
“Did you just pull me into a pantry?”
“I did.”
“I wanted a moment alone.”
“There are many times when I’m in utter awe of you.”
“I shouldn’t be surprised by what you’re capable of,”
“What you’re willing to do. But I am. I’m always...

“I’m still not done, Princess.”
“There is one more thing I need. Something that I’ve needed for days. Weeks. Months. Maybe forever.”
“But I know you won’t allow it. Not like this.”
now, and all the unknown of what awaited.
Would he bite me? Did I want that? Would I stop him? My body already knew the answer as I reached up, sinking my hand into the soft strands of his hair.
“Like you don’t think that was enough.”
He’d kissed me, and he’d done so like his very life depended on it.
“Retribution is yours, if you want it,”
“And if not, I will be your blade, the thing that ends his miserable existence.
“Or is there something you want to ask?”
“Then why are you sighing every five minutes?”
“I shouldn’t be surprised by how incredibly random that was, but I am.”
“I can sense his emotions, probably in a way similar to how you can read others. And he can sense mine,” he continued. “If something were to happen to him, if he were weakened severely, the bond would allow him to pull energy from me.” I tipped forward. “And when he was held captive?”
“When their children—the deities—were first born in this land, they summoned the once wild kiyou wolves and gave them mortal forms so they could serve as their protectors and guides in a world that was unknown to them. They were
the first wolven. Eventually, as the elementals began to outnumber the deities, the bonds shifted to them.” He leaned forward, resting his arms on his knees. “Not all elementals are bonded. Delano isn’t bonded to an elemental.”
“Because war should only be a last resort,” he answered. “And like Casteel, if it comes to that, I will have to pick up my sword, but I hope it does not.”
Your marriage will bring change to both kingdoms, one way or another.”
“But there’s no city for you to run off to. All you have is me.”
“There’s just us. No one else.”
“I like that. A lot.”
Kieran thought I asked a lot of questions now, there would be a wolven-shaped hole in the wall in his desperation to get away from me if he’d known me when I was younger.
“You’re not the only one. I expected to be picking up pieces of myself.”
“But I was once told that the best relationships are the ones where passions run high.”
“I always keep what is mine safe,”
“By the way, I’m not yours,” I told him. “I don’t belong to anyone but myself. Nothing changes that.”
“What if I just wanted a piece of you?” He shifted the reins to his other hand. “A tiny piece that belonged to me? I can think of a few I would love to have, Princess.”
“Tell me what piece of you I can have. It can be any piece of your choosing. Whatever it is, I’ll take it.” His chin grazed my cheek. “It will be my most prized possession.”
“I’m hoping that hawk returns, and instead of snatching up poor helpless animals and children, it grabs you.”
“You just need to be yourself, Poppy.”
“And threatening to stab me,”
“I know.”
“I’ll admit, that would lead the average person to believe there were no fond feelings between us, but no one would believe that I would choose a submissive Maiden over my brother. They’d expect me to fall for someone as fiery as she is kind, brave…even to a fault. Someone who pushes back.”
“They’d expect someone like you, to be honest. Not the veiled Maiden. That is not who you are.”
“What I’m telling you is that there is no one way anyone behaves in a relationship. There isn’t a textbook of things to do or how to behave with the exception of
“Yes. My apologies,”
“Or kidnapped you, there should be no stabbing or punching. Only kisses and promises upheld until dying breaths and beyond,” he said.
“That is what you deserve from who you choose to love.”
“The thing is, you won’t mess up if you get mad. You won’t do the wrong thing. Each couple is different. Some spend their time whispering sweet words in each other’s ears. Some spend the time baiting one another. Both enjoying being the tiger in the cat and mouse chase. That is us,”
“Or who
we appear to others. This won’t be hard. Not with the passion between us, and before you try to lie and say there is none, just know that it w...

“You should see your face right now.”
