“Now you don’t bullshit me,” he interjects, his breath smoking the cold air. “I saw it when you said her name. I’m betting her dad hates you because you fell in love with her—and you’re attached to scum of the fuckin’ earth.”
Lo puts a hand on my shoulder. And he pulls me into a hug. It almost breaks me. Then he whispers, “I know.” I start to shake my head. “You did enough,” he breathes.
Lo grinds his teeth, his gaze lethal on me. “I don’t know if I want to hug you or strangle you.” I can barely breathe. “I’ve got that effect on people.” I nod to him. “I’m not really into strangling though. I vote hug.” “I vote you better get out of my face.” He’s pissed but relieved, and that’s all I can hope for at this point, honestly.
Why would I give my kyber crystal to someone bad? He is light. He is harmony. He is love. The Force is within him. I saw it. I knew it. I’ve just forgotten it somehow.
“You don’t embarrass me, Luna Hale. You never have, and you never will. It’s something you already knew, but I’ll tell you a million times if I need to: I’m the guy who’s never gonna be ashamed of anything you ever do. I’ll likely do all those things with you too.”
I’m drawn into her emerging effervescence. Big word, effervescence, I know. It’d shock the pants off my dad, but I do read.
“You are my family.” Tears gather in both our eyes, tears I don’t think we’ve ever shared like this. “That’s never changing.”
“PTS-who?” I play dumb. “I just told you I’m a Jedi Knight.” “Shut the fuck up.” We’re both smiling, but with a softer one, he pinches the kyber crystal off my chest. “Hales,” I say. “Gotta love them,” he says. “Truths.” I take another deep gulp of water.
“The four of us are like the Four Musketeers. Unbreakable. Unstoppable.” “Thick as thieves,” Eliot chimes in. Behind them, Donnelly’s brows rise in disbelief. “This happen when I was asleep or what?” My stomach tosses. Eliot gives him a hard look. “We were on our way to becoming a four-pod, ride-or-die friendship group. Right on the cusp,”
My Cobalt brethren telling Luna about her dog-shit ex-boyfriend is back-stabby, traitorous behavior. Something no friend or Musketeer would do.
It truly dawns on me that they all want me to be with Luna. They’re not trying to stop me or be a buncha hypocrites about it.
Xander is cosplaying my favorite character from Dune, Paul Atreides, by wearing a black stillsuit made for the harsh desert climate of planet Arrakis.
“You’ll probably hear about it tomorrow, but he failed his psych eval.” I’m off-balance. “What?” He raises his brows. “Thatcher failed the test. He’s suspended until they clear him, and Jane wanted to be with him tonight.”
I’m so fucking in love with her, it’s not even funny anymore.
And I know I’m going to be okay. I wonder if this is what it feels like to have a father.
I will never, ever take the bonds I have with people for granted. I make that vow to myself. Because when the floor drops beneath my feet, they are the only ones there to catch me, and they need to know who they’re catching.
Off my silence, he says, “You should start writing again. It might help.” Tom grins. “You hear that Luna, Charlie misses reading your smut.” Eliot mutters something about missing my stories too.
Beckett makes his classic what the fuck face, which has me smiling again. Some things really don’t change. That expression is exactly as I remember.
“What’s the point of this?” “What’s the point of living?” Eliot refutes. “To be entertained, brother.” Beckett turns to him. “Find someone else to entertain you.” “But you’re so bad at it,” Eliot says, picking popcorn kernels off the floor. “I have to relish in this one moment—”
Xander saw me get shot down, by the way. Nothing like having your teenage client see you on your worst flirt game.
Would Mom be sad knowing she birthed a muggle?
The love of my family is the easiest thing to have belief in.
“Cassidy’s birth. Maeve’s birth. Ripley’s birth,” I tell everyone. “They were all born on the 15th. One in November, one in December, and the last in January. Cosmic happenings bring good fortune, I’ve always believed.”
@StaleBread89: Never heard of a LunaQuinn. Luna and Donnelly are the better match. No contest. #Lunnelly
Get this, Gabe and MK.” I start to grin. “Our Gabe?” “Gabe Montgomery,” Oscar confirms. “Our big rookie buffoon. He was feeding her ice chips, Donnelly. While she was in labor and delivery. Redford saw it with his own two eyes.”
He’s back in the city that has my heart, but I’m here with the girl who has my heart and soul. Easy which one wins out.
“Loving when I should be grieving. Smiling when I believed I couldn’t be happy. Hopeful when I only knew to doubt,” she whispers. “I’ve experienced plenty of amazing things already on Earth, and they’re all because of you.”
“My heart is a chasm of everything I know and love, and it will always be filled with you.” I can’t look away from her. “I love you, Luna. I love you so bad, not having you just hurts.”
Lo drinks his coffee. “I’d tell you not to fall, but I’m actually hoping it happens. Imagine that.” He feigns surprise.
It slams into me. He’s choosing me over the Hales. Farrow has always put action to his words, and if there’s any proof that I am his brother, his family, then this is it.
