“Doc, since the day I met him, my life’s been about him. That ain’t gonna change any time soon.”
“Thank God he has you. This can’t be easy for you, and I’m sorry I can’t be more help.”
“It’s not easy,” I admitted. “But I love him.”
Because that’s what you do when you love someone, right? You’d do anything to make them happy. Even if that means letting them go.”
“He will remember you,” she said, her bottom lip trembling. “He will remember how much you love him. I know he will.”
I chanced a look at him and found him with his face still turned skyward, a small smile at his lips. Christ, he was . . . everything to me.
“Calm,” he said.
“What? Calm, what?”
“You. Me. You make me feel calm. I trust you. I dunno why. But I’m calm when you’re here.”

“So when I go home,” he said, slow blinking, almost aslee...

“I wish I could tell you he’ll regain his memories, but I can’t.”
“Yeah. We’ll just have to make new ones.”
“You can’t be shaken, can you?”
“Quite the opposite actually. But what choice do I have? He might not remember me, but he needs me. And I love him.”
“I wish every one of my patients had a you.”
“I think he wants to know why he can’t remember me?” I offered gently.
“It’s all I want.
“And I want to feel what goes with it. That’s the hardest part. It’s not just losing the memories. I lost the feelings as well, and I want that back.”
“We’ll get back to that. You fell in love with me once, what’s to say you can’t love me twice?”
