“Yes,” I said with the patience and smile of a thousand angels.
“She said I wasn’t sincere,” I repeated, recycling my previous observation. “So, I will drown her in apologies until she gets one that hits whatever vague requirement she’s settled on.”
He’ll suddenly turn colder than a prissy mean girl in high school, but we can roll with that.”
“Where, then, do we stand?” “Not very close together.”
“Your butt is still off limits to me, then?” “Yes!” I bristled at him and sank deeper into the chair as if it could protect me. “Why are you so obsessed with my butt, anyway?” “Mere curiosity. You are profoundly protective of it, so I imagine there must be a reason for that.”
Naturally, I assume this means she and Rupert will be besties.” “What an auspicious start to our alliance.”
If it was mad, it might express this by taking away all hot water from me, or by sending a raccoon down a chimney, which it had done once when I was a kid and broke a window but blamed it on the next-door neighbors. (Let me tell you, after that I was an extremely honest child. Nothing traumatizes you quite like taking an angry, sooty raccoon to the face.)
“Does the entire Drake Family like to act like haughty know-it-alls and then use heart-twisting motivations to excuse their behavior, or is that just an upper management thing?”
I had hoped the mischievous wizard brothers would keep their mouths shut, but based on the way the car was angrily veering around the road, I’m pretty sure Rupert was close to homicidal. “Rupert must be having fun,” Celestina chirped with innocence. “Do you think he’ll refrain from killing them?” I asked. Rupert’s car abruptly slammed to a stop, then raced after us again moments later.
Ah-hah! I was right—and I didn’t even have to be rude or nosy and ask!
“Your doubt wounds me.” “I’m totally sure.”
He flicked off his handgun’s safety and nonchalantly shot the floor. Slivers of wood sprayed the air, and instantly the ground parted beneath Killian’s feet, sending him plunging into the basement. The wood floor sealed up behind him, repairing the bullet hole, making it look as if nothing had happened. I turned to Celestina. “Please allow me to express my congratulations on becoming the new Drake Family Elder.”
I want to know what shady plans of yours required input from your kitchen staff.”
(That was a different conversation for a different day, preferably over the phone when Killian could try and charm me with his smokey voice but not touch me and set my brain on fire.)
“I stood in the ice cream aisle for an hour. My hands got cold! And I’m now banned from the library!”
The Paragon leaned near and spoke in the loudest whisper I’d ever heard. “See how he’s trying to nit-pick to distract you from answering your question? Classic avoidance technique.”
“A donut is too good for you,” he finally said. “You’re as mentally stable as a computer in need of updates.”
Just last week she picked out a very appropriate tea for the Day King when he dropped by to complain. I call it ‘calm the heck down.’ A few swigs and he was sleeping like a baby!”
It will be easy enough to convince the vampires that we’ll use the occasion to look benevolently down on the fae to remind them of their shame.
It was fun, but when they made me skip dinner, insisting there would be refreshments served at the party, I started getting a bit hangry and the glitter wore off.
“I could torch your tuxedo coat.” My wizard mark burned as I wove flickering blue flames through my fingers. Killian’s smirk deepened. “You want to see me without a shirt? Oh my, Hazel, you’ll turn this moment into a scandalous liaison.”
“Then I couldn’t make you blush—which, along with the rising sun and the peace of night, makes my life complete.”
It’s one of the oldest tricks in the book, and I am mildly disappointed you fell for it.”
Drake Hall is so charming—certainly much better than when I last saw it and your underlings were so very pesky.”
“Should this be the day I leave this mortal world behind, taken by the skeletal hand of death, I wish for it to be known that I have very much enjoyed fighting with you, Adept Medeis, and meeting all of House Medeis. Also, my list that dictates who receives what weapon is under the largest pillow on my bed.”
And in that instant, I knew she was the one. The one that came rarely in a vampire’s lifetime, and sometimes not at all. The one who I would love for all of my existence, and trust to guard my back, fight at my side, and laugh with me during the day. She was more than I imagined, a dream I hadn’t thought could exist for me.
he was the one they should feel sorry for because I had a magic, sentient House at my back, which made arguments spicier, according to him.
