“Your father is a goddamn psychopath,” Gwendalina hissed, glaring at me as she shifted closer to her sister, taking her hand.
“Do you remember anything, Blue?” he asked slowly, his voice gentler than I thought I’d ever heard it. I turned to look his way in surprise and found him reaching towards Gwendalina like he wasn’t sure if he should touch her or not.
Or are you referring to the way Lionel tried to Coerce us to forget all of it?” “You remember?” I asked, my eyes widening as I looked to Roxy beside me, wondering if she did too. She gave a sharp nod, her gaze not turning towards me but staying fixed on her sister across the room. “How?” Father had used Dark Coercion on me more than once and I couldn’t fight it off.
Even the pain of my bones breaking wasn’t enough to motivate me to tear through it. I thought it was impossible. “It was our Order,” Roxy said grimly. “Apparently our fire can burn right through bullshit.” A laugh spilled from my lips before I could stop it. My father had just fed her to the shadows, her Order had Emerged and her body had been turned into a conduit for the dark power he’d stolen from the Shadow Realm and yet she was still biting at me.
I caught hold of her without thinking about it and dragged her into my arms, crushing her against my chest. My heart leapt as she pressed her cold hands to my skin and I kissed the top of her head as relief spilled through me.
“So what are they?” I demanded as the twins shared a look that let me know they already knew. “Phoenixes,” Lance breathed, the awe in his voice pulling a frown to my brow. “Not possible,” I replied with a shake of my head. “There hasn’t been a record of someone having the Phoenix Order in…” “Over a thousand years,” Lance murmured, still staring at Gwen like the world began and ended with her.
They were supposed to have been the most powerful Order of all, their flames capable of all kinds of insane things.
“We are,” both girls replied at the same time, an amused glance passing between them as they spoke in unison.
“Because if the things I’ve read about Phoenixes are true - even half true - then the two of you could be more powerful than any Fae who has walked the earth in the last millennia. You’re like the Fae of old, legendary… I don’t even know what your limits would be, but I do know that you pose an even greater threat to Lionel now. If he finds out about this before you’ve learned to harness these powers-”
I blinked in surprise as the fight went straight out of her and she bowed to her sister’s suggestion.
“We’ll stay together,” Gwen said and he nodded like he’d expected that.
I slid under the covers and Tory did the same, the two of us shifting close together like we had back in our shitty apartment in Chicago. That sofa-bed had forced us together, now we did it voluntarily, needing to draw on the comfort of our bond. We faced each other, propping our heads up on the pillows while our free hands clutched together. “Orion cast a silencing bubble,” I told her. “We can say what we like.” “I’d say what I like anyway,” Tory said with a hard look.
But his anger never seemed as strongly aimed at me as it was at Tory. And sometimes the look in his eyes seemed so much more impassioned, like it wasn’t just fury he felt toward her.
“I just didn’t picture this being the first time we woke up in the same house together.”
Because now I’d had a taste of Grus, I wasn’t going back. That girl was going to be mine.
“But you’ll still protect them because you’re a good man, Darius. And there is more to the world than power, no matter what society teaches us.”
still feel the suffocating powerlessness that had consumed me and made me realise how fucking precious she was to me. I’d lost my sister because of my mother and Lionel, and I’d nearly lost the only girl who’d filled the void Clara had left in her absence too. I didn’t care if Stella was my flesh and blood, I’d fucking kill her and Darius’s father for this.
It might take me all day, but I was going to stay here until I knew everything there was to know about Phoenixes to prepare Blue and Tory. Because there wasn’t a soul on earth who could help them right now, but me.
She gave me a small smile and I fought the urge to return it.
Her knees brushed mine under the desk and I hooked my foot around hers on instinct.
“That’s why Lionel’s power didn’t work on us,” Darcy said, looking fascinated and I nodded, rubbing my knee against hers under the table. She was always such an enthusiastic student and fuck if that didn’t get me so hard for her. She shared my love of learning and I’d often enjoyed the way her eyes lit up in awe in my classes.
Gabriel’s brows knitted together. He had the gift of The Sight and our friendship stretched back far enough for me to trust him implicitly. And more than that, he was my Nebular Ally.
“Phoenixes,” he breathed. “I saw you both as Phoenixes.”
Gabriel nodded slowly. “I don’t know much, but I felt their power through The Sight. It was like nothing I’ve ever experienced.”
“So what you’re saying is, our power is endless?” Tory asked, grinning in a way that was only going to piss Darius off. “As in, so long as I can cast fire, I’ll never run out of magic. Unlike big fat lizard shifters who have to pop off for a snooze on a heap of gold whenever they’re running low?”
is also capable of harming Orders which are resistant to fire like Manticores, Hydras and… Dragons.”
“So you’re saying that this big ass lizard can’t burn me at all, but I can totally cook his ass if I want to?” Tory asked with a smirk as she pointed at Darius.
chewed on the inside of my cheek as I surveyed Darius, wondering if he might come around to the idea that was circling in my mind. If he did, it would benefit every Fae in Solaria. Because Darius Acrux might not ever rescind his claim to the throne and I didn’t want him to. But maybe I could convince him to share it with two more candidates.
“It’s just not strictly true. We have the same hobbies and we both grew up having to deal with shitty parental figures…”
“You usually just get lumped with whatever emotion your subconscious wants to kick you in the teeth with on any given day. Look at me for example, every day I go to bed deciding to wake up perky and peppy, making friends with everyone and anyone I meet. And yet when the morning swings around, I’m still the same mean bitch I was last night.”
“Alright then. It pisses me off,” he admitted in a low tone.
“Fine. The moon was just making me think about you all night. And the idea of you hooking up with someone else drives me a little bit insane,” he said. “Especially Darius.”
Because I’m not ever going to put my life on hold for a man. Especially one who doesn’t think I’m good enough to make the cut long term.”
“If I say maybe, will you let me leave?” “You’re busy later, Roxy,” Darius said from right behind
“I’m just looking out for you, Cal. I wouldn’t want to risk her setting my dick alight,” Darius replied tauntingly. “Good thing I’m not offering then,” I snapped.
“Don’t,” I warned as he shifted towards me, his eyes on my mouth. “I’m not a lamppost to be pissed on. If you try and kiss me here in front of all these people I’ll launch you across the room.”
“Pish posh, Tory Vega!” Geraldine scalded. “One day when you’re ruling over Solaria, I will remind you of this day and you shall have to eat your words!”
“I’m afraid to admit I did,” she groaned. “My Lady Petunia set her gaze on a rather virile Siren and he fell prey to her amorous adventures.”
“Did you just call your vagina Lady Petunia?” I choked. Darcy covered her mouth to hold back her laughter and Sofia was actually crying real tears. “Alas I did. And she’s a real predator when she sets her gaze on a tempting piece of banana drama,” Geraldine admitted.
She slapped my hand with a shit eating grin on her face and my love for that girl grew tenfold. She was a goddamn savage and she’d caught Max Rigel in her net before tossing him aside like last week’s trash.
“Uhuh. Five points from Aer,” he said casually. “That’s Tory actually,” Kylie put in as I scowled at her. “Darcy has the obnoxiously coloured hair.” “I happen to like obnoxiously coloured hair,” Nox replied dryly. “And I’m aware which Vega arrived late. I was taking five points from Aer because I can’t stand a snitch.” “But sir!” Kylie whined indignantly. “Five more because I can’t stand a moaner,” he added with a cold smirk. “Oh and ten more for what you were just about to say about me to your little friend beside you.” “What? I wasn’t going to say-” “You were about to say that I might be

The Vega twins will lead you to the answers you’ve always sought.
“You’re still here, Tyler, because as much as you irritate the stars right out of the night sky, you also challenge me every damn lesson.” He seemed both angry and pleased about that.
“I think the cheer squad will suit your jovial nature, Tory. They practice two nights a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Pitball Stadium. I’m sure your Cheer Captain, Marguerite Helebor, will be most welcoming.” He dismissed Tory with a wave of his hand but she didn’t move, looking like she was about to spit venom.
