Tory?” Kylie said in a sweet voice and we both spun around in rage. “Shut up!” Orion bellowed, throwing out a hand and a blast of air knocked Kylie off of her chair onto her ass. A laugh tumbled from my throat and I turned back to face the front, finding Orion fixing his gaze on me. He ran his tongue across his fangs, seeming to
“Silencing spells can be used to stop sound escaping a certain area or to silence someone or something you would rather not hear,” Orion explained. “For example, Miss Major’s dull weekend adventures with her vapid friends.” A snort of laughter escaped me as Kylie’s mouth stopped moving as she clearly heard him and Orion waved his hand to release her from the silencing bubble.
“Are you concentrating, Miss Vega?” Orion barked suddenly and I sat up straight, finding everyone around me waving one hand in the air as they practised the movement. “Would you like to share your little daydream with the rest of the class?” He smirked, telling me he knew
“Are you okay?” she looked between my eyes like she knew exactly what had happened, but I couldn’t say anything right then.
He stood, pressing the front of his shirt down with a slanted smile. On the desk was a bottle of red wine and a small box wrapped with a ribbon. With a sharp inhale, he snatched the box, stuffing it in his pocket half a second before Tory looked up from her Atlas beside me. Her gaze fell on the wine and two glasses and her brow furrowed.
His eyes whipped to me, an ache building in them like this news was breaking his heart.
His eyes flared with realisation. “That’s what happened to you in class,” he snarled, but not like he was angry at me, like he was angry at the whole world besides me.
“I damn well can help you. And I will when I get over the shock of this. But here’s a quick pop quiz first: are you two conspiring to give me a fucking heart attack?” A small smile pulled at my lips and his expression softened a fraction. He sighed heavily and sank back down into his seat. “So long as there’s nothing else-” “There is just one other thing,” I cut across him before he could fall into the hope that that sentence was clearly bringing him.
“In your little book of black magic?” Tory taunted and he pursed his lips. “Yeah I keep it with my Ouija board and voodoo dolls,” Orion deadpanned.
“I was an idiot to bring the wine,” he said, shaking his head at himself. “No, it was sweet,” I said, standing and he glanced at me with shadows swirling in his gaze.
“So…I think I recall you snatching a pretty little box off of the table when my sister walked in.” I raised my brows, grinning up at him and I could have freaking sworn his cheeks touched with colour. “Are you blushing?” I gasped excitedly and he chewed the inside of his cheek. “No,” he grunted. “I’m just starting to think the present was a stupid idea.” “Maybe I should be
I untied the ribbon, flipping off the lid and my breath snagged in my lungs as I found a pale pink crystal inside which glimmered like starlight.
the one thing that’s clear to me is that I don’t want anyone else. So this crystal is a promise from me that I’m yours. For now. Forever. Or till it all goes to shit, I don’t know which yet.” He smiled hopefully and my heart could have burst with how much this meant to me.
“Why are you mad at me?” He frowned. “Pitball, Lance? Are you screwing with me?” I placed my hands on my hips and he grinned devilishly, hounding forward as I backed away beyond his desk. “You’re powerful. Once you’re trained, you could be a fucking legend on the pitch.” He continued to stalk me as I placed his chair between us, smiling cheekily.
“Do you like my tiny library?” he asked in a playful voice and I smiled. “You’re a total geek,” I said, loving that about him as he laughed against the crook of my neck.
up, finding Orion watching me from the doorway with a nervous sort of expression.
“You look happy,” I said, my voice unexpectedly sad, because deep down, I knew Orion wasn’t truly happy anymore. Something had broken in him since this picture had been taken and it hurt me to know it, knotting up my chest like tangled wire. “I was,” he said in a low tone, then cleared his throat.
Because then maybe I could try to find a way to reignite the fire that no longer burned in his heart.
“Don’t be an idiot, Roxy. You need to learn how to keep control of the shadows or they’ll end up destroying you,” Darius snarled. “Well at least then I’d make you happy for once,” I threw back. His gaze darkened as he looked at me. “You can’t seriously think that?”
She looked at me sternly and that in itself was enough to make me back off. Darcy hardly ever called me out on my shit, so if she was doing it now then I really must have been acting like an asshat. I let out a heavy breath. “Yeah, okay,” I agreed.
“Fine. I’ll make peace,” I promised, reaching out to grip her fingers. Because if there was one thing strong enough to make me swallow my pride, it was my love for my sister. And she needed to learn to protect herself from the shadows too.
Orion and Darius were both looking at me like they couldn’t quite believe the words coming out of my mouth, but I pressed on for the sake of peacekeeping and more importantly, making sure that Darcy’s progress against the shadows wouldn’t be hindered by me.
With a bit more effort, I even managed to make the hard ground softer so it was kinda like sitting on a cushion. I smirked at my achievement and pressed my magic out to do the same to the ground beneath Darcy and Orion. Orion looked at me in surprise as he settled back into his now comfortable spot. “You’re gaining better control of your earth magic,” he commented and I smirked.
Orion offered his hand to Darcy and she took it. I shifted back before Darius could claim mine. “It sounds like the best person to use as an anchor is someone you’d walk through hell to stay with, right?” I asked. “Well obviously the stronger the bond you feel to the person grounding you, the more you’ll want to stay with them,” Orion agreed. “Sounds good.” I took Darcy’s other hand from her lap and she glanced between me and Orion for a moment like she was unsure before releasing him.
“Obviously neither of us feel strongly about either of you so we should just do this together.” Orion looked mildly irritated by our decision as he looked between us but he shrugged finally. “Obviously not,” he said, though it kinda sounded like he didn’t agree at all.
“I will,” I said quickly. Darcy frowned at me but I held her gaze, not backing down. “If this is dangerous then I’m not risking you doing it first,” I said simply. “You’re the only thing I’ve got that matters to me in this world. If I lost you, I might as well be dead anyway so I’m not arguing.”
“I can’t promise you that this isn’t dangerous,” he said, his eyes on Darcy. “But the two of you are the strongest Fae I’ve ever met. Hell you’re the strongest Fae there is. I believe you can do this. And I swear that if you get into any difficulty with it, I’ll do everything in my power to help you.”
“So will I,” Darius added and my skin tingled at the intensity of that vow.
I blew out a breath and relaxed as I let my power merge with my sister’s. The feeling was so natural, like we’d always been meant to be one creature instead of two.
Darcy’s magic felt like an extension of my own. It only made my power burn fiercer, stronger, brighter.
Darcy inhaled in surprise somewhere near and far away at once and I opened my eyes. Darkness danced before my vision but it didn’t stop me from seeing anything. A smile twisted my lips as I spotted the shadows coiling in my outstretched palm, their potent power waiting for me to bend it to my will. “Good,” Orion said steadily. “Now banish them again.”
“Pull her back, Blue,” Orion commanded
“Come back, Tory!” Darcy’s voice broke through the fog surrounding my mind and I stopped as I heard her voice like the first clap of thunder before a storm broke free.
I gritted my teeth, focusing on my sister’s power and presence beside me as I turned to her and she pulled me back out of the dark.
“You did well to find your way back.
Now that we can wield them I can only imagine their call will be louder, their pull more demanding. But we will figure it out together. The four of us.”
“You waste your life on that piece of trash.” He jerked his chin at the Xbox which was my only companion, my only contact to the rest of the world. Even if I was anonymous and the online friends I’d gathered could never step into my life for real. Father hooked it off of the unit beneath the TV so it hit the floor with a thud.
When I was younger, Darius had taken the brunt of the beatings. More than his fair share. He’d stepped between us a hundred times.
The only thing that made anything better in this house was Darius coming home. Though even better than that was if he was bringing his ‘friend’ Tory Vega with him. Bullshit was he not obsessed with her. I knew my brother better than anyone.
Darius: Dark hair, legs that look great in short shorts and a smile to die for. Xavier: Drool. If you don’t date her, I will. Darius: Great. I’ll let Lance know you’re interested. The stars only know he needs some action.
But at least I’d have my brother for tonight. And I liked hanging out with Lance too when Father allowed it.
I scrolled down to the photos she’d uploaded and the first row showed images of a Pegasus herd with the caption Had a quick fly through the clouds before breakfast – there’s no greater way to start the day! My heart hammed as I drank in the sight of her herd, something deeply ingrained in me longing to unite with them.
