Just clients. And if anyone or anything tried to hurt them, I would rip its intestines out.
“So we’re locked out of the bridge and the bot pilot is gone and we don’t know what’s flying the ship.” The good thing about being a construct is that you can’t reproduce and create children to argue with you. This time I did sound testy. “I’m working on it.”
In Preservation culture, asking payment for anything considered necessary for living (food, power sources, education, the feed, etc.) was considered outrageous, but asking payment for life-saving help was right up there with cannibalism.
Apparently the transport and the humans are arguing about how best to retrieve an endangered SecUnit. It is like retrieving an endangered client, only the client is a SecUnit and the humans are planning the retrieval. And the transport is angry because it wants to plan the retrieval. This is … a lot to process. Murderbot 2.0 asked me what I wanted. I want to help with this retrieval.
Murderbot 2.0 asked me what I want. I want to help. Pause. Perihelion: Good.
Being abandoned on a planet + locked up and forgotten with old equipment + no feed access were my top three issues and it was a little overwhelming to have them happen all at once.
The humans would not abandon this SecUnit even though part of our function was to be disposable if necessary. There is a lot about what is going on here that I don’t understand. But I am participating anyway.
“ART, I thought you told them about me.” ART said, I told them I had met a rogue SecUnit. I didn’t imply that you were every SecUnit ever mentioned in the newsfeeds.
But no one had ever rescued me before except Dr. Mensah, when she went into the DeltFall habitat after me, and ART had been willing to wipe a colony off a planet for me, and watching the security vid of a group of humans strategizing how best to get me out of there was … a lot, for me, considering the whole reason for me/constructs being created was so I/we could be abandoned in an emergency.
“I don’t want to not see you again.” She took a moment to sort out my verbs. “I don’t want to not see you again, either.” Her expression was still thoughtful. “But if you do find you want to spend more time with Perihelion, you could always come back and visit us.” It was getting easier to talk about this. “Preservation was the first place I was a part of and I don’t want to not be a part of it. But I like being with ART. I want to keep being with it.”
