“Stop kicking me, Marley,” I splutter. Tristan breaks into a broad smile as he looks between us. “Keep kicking her, Marley,” he says. “Kick some sense into her.”
“He’s still with you. He will always be with you. Trust him to watch over you. You need to let him go, Claire.”
The pain never goes away, but some days it feels like it might just kill me. I’m an empty shell. My body functions as it should, but I’m barely breathing.

The sun’s reminder of what I have lost. I hate my hand without his ring. I hate my life without his love.
He’s dead enough that I’m lonely . . . but alive enough that I can’t fathom moving on.
“Ah, yes.” She sighs. “Let’s blame my distaste for you on meds, shall we? There couldn’t possibly be another reason why you repulse me, could there now?”
He rushes me and grabs my face in his hands and kisses me. His tongue swipes through my lips, and he pushes me up against the wall. “Believe me, Claire Anderson . . . the last thing I feel when I look at you . . . is pity.”
“You only get one life. So you need to grab it with both hands.”
When I’m holding her in my arms like this, intimacy is running between us like a river, and just for a moment . . . She is mine.
“You’re not very hospitable, Claire,” I huff. “You really should work on this.” She rolls her eyes and goes to the stairs. “I hope Muff pees on your head.”
“That kid.” I pinch the bridge of my nose, unable to believe it. “He put sugar in the gas tank of my Aston Martin.” “What?” “Oh, it gets better. He also put hair-removal cream in my fucking conditioner bottle.”
“How do you feel, Tris?” I whisper. His eyes meet mine. “Like myself.” Emotion fills my heart. “I feel that when I’m with you, I’m who I’m supposed to be.”
“You’re everything I never knew I wanted. Feminine but strong. Your beautiful body.” He smiles softly. “Your selflessness with your boys.” I watch him as my heart somersaults in my chest. “You put everyone’s needs before yourself, Claire.” My stomach clenches. “And for the first time in my life, you make me want to put someone before me.”
I don’t want him to worry about anything, least of all me.”
I smile into the darkness. She loves me. For the first time in my life, I feel at home.
“You and the boys . . . are saving me. Not the other way around.”
The thing about loving a powerful man is knowing when to stand back and let him take the reins.
“When will you be back?” he asks. I turn back to him. “When my boys are men.”
