“You know, you always were one of my favorites,” the entity said as the faces smiled together. “In spite of all the questions you asked me. Now go, and follow your impulses. You are correct in all of them, especially the one involving my son.”
“Hear me out. The first rule in conflict is finding the weakness in your opponent and exploiting it. The Omega knows what I
do and he knows about you. His very existence is at stake. You think he’s not going to do the math and put a target on your back? Eliminate you and what I can do to him is out the door. Problem solved.”
“You can dematerialize to me, anywhere I am. I can’t do that. I’m stuck with the ground game. You can be covered by a legion and so can I when we’re together. But if we lose you? It’s all over for me. We are both equally
important, but what I do has to be in the field. What you do can be done anywhere.”
“In cash, and I will not apologize for being off the grid. No one should trust the government.”
“I just wasn’t enough, I guess. For him, the one I love… at the end of the day, he just didn’t want me. It’s a hard truth to accept. And
you’re right, I’m looking for physical explanations because I’d rather there be something more external for why he didn’t love me back. Something less about the inside of me. You can change your clothes and your hair, put on a different lipstick, do your nails a different way. But when it’s who you
are, you can’t really work with tha...

You’re worthy of love. You deserve to be respected and cherished, and to get that, you don’t need to be anything different than you are.
You have been created for a reason. You’re here for a reason. You have a purpose, and you have to believe that you’ll find someone who will help you in that purpose. And until that happens? All you really need to know is that you don’t have to be validated by anybody but yourself. You are enough.”
“It’ll be because when you look at him and can’t look away? He’ll be doing the exact same thing at the exact same time. It’s in the eyes, Mel. They’re
the windows of the soul, right?”
Amazing what the right female will do for a guy.
The act of bringing into being a mortal—or many of them—is not the same as parenting them. One does not know this until it is too late, however. Until one has done damage that is regrettable.
swear to God,” she muttered, “it’s like someone keeps getting into my brain and stealing things from me.”
“He looks like a bumblebee caught under a glass,” Lassiter remarked. Butch glanced over at the angel. “I know you’re immortal and shit, but you better run like a motherfucker when you let him out.”
“You know, I’m inclined to agree with you.” Suddenly, the angel’s odd-colored eyes got really fucking serious. “You let me know if you need him, though. And be careful. Things are so close to the end, and that’s always when the parachute fails.”
But there was one way he could take care of her. If the definition of love was putting the object of your affection before yourself, then there was one sacrifice that he certainly could make on her behalf. No matter what it cost him.
Meeting her had changed a lot for him. Had changed… pretty much everything. And he had the strangest sense that if he spoke of this, if he said it out loud, it would be real. It would be forever.
“The cross,” V said gravely. “The cross will save you.”
“I have been known by many names, but I have always been female so it would be rude of you to ask my age. I am the Omega’s little sister. I am Devina.”
“I was lost until I saw you sucking back one of those lessers. I was just walking around this city, miserable and dejected, night after night. And then you
talked to me about the nature of love and the female you fell for. You made me feel like that could happen to anyone. Including a demon like me. So I owe you.”
Devina shook her head in a regretful way. “We’re even now. So after tonight? We’re on different sides. You need to know this.”
“So the war is going to restart with you?” “In a manner of speaking. But I don’t discriminate like my brother did. I’m an equal opportunity killer, humans, vampires, wolven. I don’t give a shit as long as it’s fun.”
Lassiter, the Fallen Angel. As Devina narrowed her eyes and her temper rose, he smiled at her. And
lifted one of his hands. With an elaborate show, he blew her a kiss, turned that palm around… and extended his middle finger at her. And thus the next generation of conflict was born.
