The television business had become so youth-oriented that viewers over the age of fifty were all but worthless. Advertisers bought commercial time almost exclusively on the basis of the demographic makeup of the audience. A show needed good young “demos” to make big profits because advertisers had concluded that only young customers were likely to switch brands.
