You know, there is a reason all the fairy tales they tell us as kids end with the wedding. Nobody wants to read about how hard it is to actually be married. Falling in love is the easy part, the fun part. It’s staying in love that’s hard.
A tinge of jealousy rears its head, and I tamp it down. It’s not Elle’s fault my mother is so self-absorbed. It’s not any of these people’s fault.
Gram got seventy-four birthdays. Braxton and Elle’s momma got only thirty. Some get less than that. Yet time is the one thing we waste more of than anything else, and we never even notice. We always think we have more until we don’t. We are even so careless as to wish it away. Wishing for the weekend to hurry up and come or the workday to be over with or the winter months to pass. Never appreciating the moment we have right now and never stopping to truly live it.

“Come on, let’s get all gussied up for this. That arena is going to be full of dirty, rugged cowboys. We have to look our best.” “Dirty cowboys?” I ask. “Oh, yes, that’s just the way I like them. Extra dirty.”
“Sometimes, a love so big comes along, and even if you only get to hold on to it for a little while, it can fill you up for a lifetime. That was my Arthur. I’ve never felt the need to fill his place in my heart. I have my family and friends and have never suffered a single moment of loneliness. I’m sure I’ll only get a quick look around before you all join me. Remember, with the Lord, a day is like a thousand years.

You sure it’s not too fast?” “Six weeks,” I say as I look down at the ring. “What’s that?” “Six weeks. That’s how long it took Dad to know that he wanted to marry Mom and to put this ring on her finger. It only took me four.”
“Sophia Doreen Lancaster, I know it seems fast, but I’m a man who knows who he is and I don’t need a lot of time to ponder when I know something is right. I love you, and I want to spend the rest of my life loving you. If you’ll have me.”
“You chose me,” she whispers. I nod, and she continues. “I choose you too, forever.”
